5 Books for February 2025

Books are so important. If there is one thing that stands out that my wife, Karen G Clemenson, and I have in common in our upbringing it is that our families ensured that we could read and they were serious about it. The books I grew up with were part of my childhood and part of me. They took me places when there was no one around to take me anywhere. Even as an adult, I am still traveling through books and learning and growing and reading children’s books is saving me from the stress of adult life; I really need this right now. I encourage you, even if you don’t have children that live with you to dig out your favorite children’s books and read them. Let the stress of the day melt off and be reminded of an easier time.

Now without further ado 5 Books for February 2025:

Standing in the Need of Prayer by Carole Boston Weatherford

I have read and reviewed Standing in the Need of Prayer by Carole Boston Weatherford in the past. It was such an outstanding and powerful, poetry book based on the words of a gospel song and brought to life with the meaningful and strong illustrations by Frank Morrison, that I had found at the Longview Public Library, that I chose to add this book to my personal collection. As I opened the package, last week, I realized that the timing was perfect to share Standing in the Need of Prayer again for Black History Month.

I love this nonfiction book because it doesn’t hide the slave ships that first began bringing stolen people to the United States in 1619, before we were ever the United States of America, yet the artist doesn’t go so far that young children will be too frightened. The chains of oppression are right out in front, but so is hope. The book illustrates how Black people made themselves heard through speeches, music, art, military service, politics, sports, and being willing to stand where others had not before. Within these pages, growth is celebrated.

I also find the resources in the back of this picture book to be helpful and inspiring. We may have more to do, but we have come so far.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Standing in the Need of Prayer by Carole Boston Weatherford on Amazon.

Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik

Little Bear (Little Bear, #1)Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I was a little girl, I enjoyed Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik. This book actually has four stories in it: What will Little Bear Wear?, Birthday Soup, Little Bear Goes to the Moon, and Little Bear’s Wish. Although I enjoyed all of the stories, and I had a hard time choosing between the last two, Little Bear Goes to the Moon is my favorite story because I love when children use their imagination.

Armed with his homemade space helmet, Little Bear, insists he can fly like a bird to the moon, even though his mother bear says that isn’t true. Along with his imagination, he finds that the moon is just like his world and he makes it home in time for lunch, where he can stop living his fantasy and enjoy the lunch Mother Bear made for him.

The illustrations by Maurice Sendak are simple and endearing and add to this classic fiction story, which has a lot of repetition and rhyme, This is perfect for young children learning to read.

I got this adorable book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik on Amazon.

The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff

The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff moves very fast. there are so many things that happen in this book about animals, elephants, family and France, yet there isn’t time to absorb them. The idea of this story is fantastic but very hard to believe. I was shocked to see that I have read this book before and loved it. It is amazing what a few years can do to one’s perspective.

I do think the illustrations are wonderful and help tell the story quite a lot.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoffy on Amazon.

Read my Review on GoodReads from a few years ago:

The Story of Babar (Babar, #1)The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Story of Babar The Little Elephant by Jean De Brunhoff, was published in 1933 and must have been quite a hit among children. I know I loved it. Even though Babar loses his mother, his adventurous spirit leads him to the city and new human friends. Later he becomes king. What a sweet story that I believe can stand the test of time.

Days With Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel

Days with Frog and Toad (Frog and Toad, #4)Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the book Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel, I found a total of 5 stories: Tomorrow, The Kite, Shivers, The Hat, and Alone. I really had a hard time choosing a favorite but I finally decided on Alone. The reason I chose Alone, is that even the best of friends sometimes needs some time alone and that is what this story is about. Toad went to Frog’s house to find a note telling Toad that Frog was gone and that he wanted to be alone.

Toad spent the day worrying about their relationship, when really Frog was in great spirits and just wanted to spend uninterrupted time being thankful. Being thankful is important, just like spending time with our friends.

I really enjoy the honest and authentic amphibian relationship that Frog and Toad share.

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel on Amazon.

Harold’s ABC’s by Crockett Johnson

Harold's ABC (Purple Crayon Book)Harold’s ABC by Crockett Johnson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I believe I have read all or at least most of Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon books, but I must admit, Harold’s ABC’s is my least favorite of these children’s classics. The story and the art was tedious and forced to include all the letters of the alphabet in order. This is very unlike the natural flow of Harold’s natural drawing imagination.

Book Review: Come to the Garden by Jennifer Wilder Morgan

Come to the Garden by Jennifer Wilder Morgan was a lovely Christian read about the main character, Jennifer, and her angel, Margaret. They met on her birthday in her Jennifer’s garden to talk about different experiences that Jennifer had had in her lifetime where God had been communicating and working in her life.

“All of God’s children have the ability to encounter the Divine but must have hearts and minds that are open to the possibility…Anything is possible for one who is willing to believe.” Chapter 2

Throughout the book I found important messages:

  • God knew me before I was born.
  • When we worship with music God joins us and rejoices.
  • Talk to God like He is your friend.
  • Listen to your dreams.
  • Listen to His voice.
  • God is the eye of the storm.
  • God is always with me. There is no darkness too dark for His light to encompass.
  • When God speaks, obey.
  • The past, present and future are all connected.
  • God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one. They are light in the darkness.
  • It is the Divine will of the Father that all of His children are restored to Him.
  • Death is part of life, not the end; it is our way back to our origin.
  • When we don’t know what to pray our spirit does because God already know what we need.
  • Heaven is right here.
  • God wants to be the delight of our heart as we are the delight of His heart.

I have called you by name, you are Mine. Isaiah 43:1

This book was what I needed at this time. Something light, yet not; a reminder that I am a child of God and He is always communicating with me for His good pleasure. I chuckled a lot during the reading of this faith fiction novel but I also had a few aha moments. I really enjoyed this book.

I got this book from my sister, Jamie Holloway. You can get your own copy of Come to the Garden by Jennifer Wilder Morgan on Amazon.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Have you ever considered what you would do if you came face to face with an angel in your garden? I haven’t, until I read this book. I am still not sure what I would do, but I did enjoy reading Come to the Garden by Jennifer Wilder Morgan. This book about listening to God and hearing what He has to say and learning to hear Him and be of service to him was both lighthearted and yet profound. I would recommend you read this book. It isn’t scary or too much, it is just right.

5 Books for January 2025

January has been quite the month. It is the start of a new year and the start of a new presidency. I have been having some dental work done. There are many reasons to turn to children’s books. As I have written before, children’s books are great stress reliever.  We don’t have children in our house, but we sure do own a lot of children’s books, not just so I can write this blog, but in case my great nephews come over…or any other amazing short people or just anyone that wants to have a light read wants to grab one.

Now without further ado 5 Books for January 2025:

The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan and Jan Berenstain

The Berenstain Bears Count Their BlessingsThe Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan Berenstain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan and Jan Berenstain is just another sweet story, in a long line of high morale children’s classics that help teach positivity. In this story, Mama Bear is a bit stressed because every time Brother and Sister go to visit a friend, they come back, excited about what their friends have, they they don’t have. But on this day, there is thunder and lightening storm that knocks out the electricity. This is the perfect time for Mama and Papa to talk about the weather and counting their blessings as the family huddles around the fire with their hot chocolate.

I find this fiction animal picture book to be endearing and educational.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan and Jan Berenstain on Amazon.

Curious George is a monkey that always finds himself in an adventure. In Curious George Flies a Kite by Margret Rey, the man in the yellow hat has work to do so George has the day to amuse himself. His new ball is a lot of fun, until George gets distracted by the window and must see who would live in the tiny house next door. He tries to go fishing on his own but has no success and luckily his friend, Bill, is there to help get George out of the water. Fortunately, the man in the yellow hat is able to catch George in a helicopter and bring George and the kite back home.

Frank the Farting Flamingo by Humor Heals Us

Frank the Farting Flamingo: A Story About a Flamingo Who Farts (Farting Adventures Book 2)Frank the Farting Flamingo: A Story About a Flamingo Who Farts by Humor Heals Us
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Frank the Farting Flamingo by Humor Heals Us is just another children’s fiction picture book that gives us another reason to talk about farting. I don’t think most kids need a reason for this, but they will enjoy it. Frank is adorable though…and who doesn’t like to fart anyway?

I originally bought a copy of this book for my friend Linea, who insists she has the soul of a 10-year-old boy living inside of her. She loves flamingos and it made her laugh so much that I bought a copy for myself.

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of Frank the Farting Flamingo by Humor Heals Us on Amazon.

Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel

Frog and Toad Are Friends (Frog and Toad, #1)Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I had Frog and Toad books as a child and I was glad to recently obtain the collection. Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel is a delightful collection of 5 stories about amphibian friends, Frog and Toad: Spring, The Story, A Lost Button, A Swim and The Letter. I enjoyed all of the stories about Frog and Toad and their animal friends but my favorite is The Story.

Frog had come to visit Toad and he did not feel well. Toad offered Frog his bed and Frog asked Toad for a story. Toad, not able to think of a story, did all sorts of things to try to make his brain come up with one. He was not successful. But just as Frog felt better, he and Toad switched spots, because Toad no longer felt well. In turn, Toad asked for a story and Frog told Toad a story about a friend that did all sorts of silly things to help him come up with a story to tell his sick friend. By the end of the story Toad was sound asleep.

When I read this classic children’s story, my wife, Karen G Clemenson, had come home for lunch and she very much enjoyed these stories too. She told me that she enjoyed The Letter the most. It was about Toad and how he got sad waiting for the mail because he never got anything. When he told Frog about this, Frog immediately went home and wrote him a letter about how much he enjoyed his friendship. Frog gave the message to a snail to deliver. Four days later, as they were waiting for the mail, both Frog and Toad were overjoyed that Toad got such a lovely letter. I enjoyed this story too because it reminded me of my sister, Jamie Holloway, and I because even though we communicate daily, we also send letters to each other.

I enjoy how these two friends truly love and accommodate each other in this book. What a lovely example of friendship.

Book Review: The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway

Santiago is an old Cuban fisherman. He lives alone because his wife has died. He fishes alone because the boy, Manolin, he used to fish with no longer has permission to fish with him after so many day without fish. This does not stop the boy from caring for him though. Santiago likes to talk about baseball, but he loves to dream about Africa, in his youth and about the lions on the beach.

After 85 days, Santiago set off his fishing adventure alone to go fishing. This time his line is caught be a great fish. A fish longer than the boat and larger than he had ever caught by himself. For 3 days and 2 nights Santiago held onto this mighty fish, that he greatly respects. He finally brought the fish to his demise. He lashed the great marlin to the side of the boat.

As they headed home, 6 sharks attacked the carcass before an entire army of sharks made their way to the boat. Santiago fought them all, but they all got their share of that great fish. Santiago was sad that he had allowed the great fish to take them so far out and that he had even killed the great fish only to have lost him to the sharks.

The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a beautiful American Novel about friendship, longevity, respect for life and honesty. It was a wonderful read. It was written in 1952 and in 1954 it won the Nobel Prize for literature. This is the first book by Ernest Hemingway I have ever read, but I am sure it is not my last.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway on Amazon.

Book Review: Mary: A Flesh and Blood Biography of the Virgin Mother by Lesley Hazleton

Mary: A Flesh and Blood Biography of the Virgin Mother by Lesley Hazleton is a very special book that helped me to not only understand some of the culture in the Middle East better, but by knowing about Mary, I have a deeper understanding of Jesus. I really enjoyed this nonfiction book.

Mary’s true name is Maryam. She had brown skin and almost black hair. She was from Galilee, Nazareth. A tiny place with only 200 to 300 people living there. Galilee is never mentioned in the Hebrew Torah because it was so small. it’s name means, “small fort.” Galilee is located along the Silk Road to the Jordan River, in Palestine. The villagers were very poor. Though many riches were carried along that road, they were only passing through. Maryam and her neighbors would never have seen any of them. Although we often see Maryam in a while gown and blue shawl, she would have never worn those colors, for those colors were afforded only to the rich. Maryam would have worn black, red or yellow, or faded versions of those colors because there were flowers in the area that were used to color their fabric.

Drought was common in Galilee and water was never wasted. Nothing was wasted. Water used for washing was used to water plants. The remaining wheat, after threshing was used in sleeping pallets. Animal dung was used as fuel for fire. The people were lean just like the land. Although some people in the bible lived very long lives, these people were the rich ones that could afford proper nutrition. Most people were poor, like the villagers in Galilee. Most people did not live longer than 40-50 years. Life was hard. Puberty meant fertility and fertility meant marriage. Mary was 13 when she had Jesus. This was not uncommon.

Maryam and everyone in her village were illiterate but they knew the stories of their Hebrew history. They would tell them every night around the fire. She was not ignorant. Maryam knew of the prophets and of Yahweh.

“What we now think of in the west as the separate spheres of religion, politics, ethnicity, and culture were so deeply intertwined that there was not distinction between them.

A Jew—Yehudi in both Aramaic and Hebrew—was literally someone from Judea, Yehuda. Judean-ness was an ethnic and national identity, and the Jerusalem temple, with it’s recognition of Yahweh as the ultimate god, was the cement binding that identity.”

Before Jesus, the temple was a slaughterhouse for constant sacrifices. The temple was not a place for worship. As parts of Judea changed hands through wars, temples were destroyed. Historians were beginning to see that although people could live under laws, laws did not have to control minds. This was part of John the Baptist’s message. This was the beginning of religion as we know it.

“What Baptist preached was inclusive; every person mattered, registered on the grand scale of things, and made a difference in the world. The temple cult depended on birth, wealth, and influence; the populist one, on faith and commitment.”

The fact that Baptist preached that God was inside you and not in a temple, was a threat to the King’s authority. This is the true reason Baptist was killed.

There was so much oppression from the rich on the poor. Families lost their land and sold their children to pay taxes imposed by the King and the tax collectors. As the people fought back, they would be crucified in plain sight by the Romans. When people were crucified, it was never one at a time, or even 3, like it tells us in the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. There could be hundreds or thousands crucified at one time. The guards were not paid well and did not like to take the bodies down and left them there for days to be ravished by vultures; when they were taken down, the bodies were not buried, but thrown in the open ditches alongside the the area where the crosses were, to be devoured by wild animals, which was disgraceful to the Jews. Because Maryam was a shepherd girl, she would have known all the perfect hiding places and every cave and tree for shade. She would have helped the rebels.

“To be killed in the struggle for independence was to achieve a form of immortality. It was to be celebrated in song and story as a death chosen rather than imposed.”

Maryam’s grandmother was the village healer and midwife. She used herbs to heal people. When Maryam is out in the hills, she collected herbs for her grandmother. Maryam learned all her grandmother had to teach about healing. Maryam knew about birth control and abortion. Both were necessary, especially among very poor families. Her, “Yes,” to God to become pregnant, was also a, “Yes,” to bear and give birth to the child. She could have changed her mind. She had the knowledge to end the pregnancy at any time.

Maryam taught Jesus everything she knew about shepherding and healing. He was an excellent student, as if He already knew how. Jesus was her only son and Maryam was at the cross to witness his death. She must have felt HIs pain as her own. The fact that Jesus was buried is abnormal. The women that joined Maryam to clean and anoint and wrap Jesus’ body were the beginning of Christianity.

After Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus passed Maryam to John, His disciple, to care for her. She couldn’t go back to Nazareth after all the turmoil Jesus had caused, so they may have lived in Ephesus. However there are accounts that lead some people to believe Maryam didn’t stay with John, but joined with the women that were part of the followers of Jesus. They lived and worked together, teaching each other and healed each other and others that came to them for physical, spiritual and mental healing.

“Each time a woman gives birth, each time a woman sits between another’s legs and cradles the emerging newborn’s head, each time a woman sings in joy or wails in mourning, seeks out knowledge or teaches it to others, works for justice or acts for peace or risks her life for freedom, the mantle of Maryam is handed on.”

This book is full of history, politics, relationship and humanity. I feel so inspired after reading it. Maryam is more real to me, than she ever has been. I am thankful that I found this book.

I got this book from my personal collection you can get your own copy of Mary: A Flesh and Blood Biography of the Virgin Mother by Lesley Hazleton on Amazon.

Mary: A Flesh and Blood Biography of the Virgin Mother by Lesley Hazleton is a powerful book that studies many facts and accounts from around the history and culture of the Middle East and the time when Maryam, the mother of Jesus Christ was alive. This account of what may have really happened helps create a true human experience for the woman that gave birth to the Son of God and raised Him to change the world. I found this book fascinating and could hardly put it down.

Book Review: Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg

All over the world at one time or another, multiple sexes and types of relationships have been accepted. It wasn’t until the wealthy chose to control people that they divided people into classes. This is when hostility toward Queer folks, especially Transgender people became acceptable and expected. I learned a lot from reading this nonfiction book: Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg.

Some Names People Have Used to Define Transgender People are:

  • Androgynes
  • Bearded Women
  • Bigenders
  • Bulldagger
  • Butch
  • Cross-dresser
  • Cross genders
  • Drag Queens
  • Drag Kings
  • Gender benders
  • He/She
  • Intersexuals
  • Female to Male (FTM)
  • Feminine Men
  • Male to Female (MTF)
  • Masculine Women
  • Passing Women / Men
  • Shape Shifters
  • Trans
  • Transgender
  • Transgenderist
  • Transvestite
  • Women body builders

Native Americans use the term Two-Spirit to refer to transgender people.

Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for cross-dressing.

The author, Leslie Feinberg, had grown up always being a masculine child and she needed someone like her to be found in history and in a pamphlet by Bob McCubbin, McCubbin outlined how in early communal societies, people had honored all forms of human love and expression but as the wealthy divided society into classes, those leaders were increasingly hostile towards same-sex relationships. The stigma of race, nationality, religion, sex or gender was meant to dehumanize individuals and justify enslavement and the now male-dominated society as it changed from matrilineal and communal living. It was about money and politics. Even in the bible.

The witch trials or “Holy” Inquisition began in 1233. Women that followed other religions besides Catholicism, or held small amounts of land, women that had medical knowledge. such as midwives that shared birth control or abortion methods were accused of being witches and accused of being able to change sexes. Trans people, Lesbians, Gay men, Muslims, Jews, Herbalists, Healers and Scientists were all at risk of death.

Some people may choose to pass from female to male because society is so unfair to women.

Jazz musician, Billy Tipton, died in 1989 from an ulcer because he was afraid to go to a doctor and be found out to be a biological female. There are no personal records to explain why he hid his identity. During his lifetime, it was very hard for females to become jazz musicians and there was a lot of lesbian oppression. Both of these reasons could be valid for Tipton.

As soon as the attending doctor found out Tipton’s sex, he announced it to the world.

“If you are not Transexual, Transgender, or Intersexual, if you’re not a Cross-dresser, Bigender, or Drag queen or king, then perhaps you already understand that defending our right to be who we are is inextricably tied to your own right to explore and define who you are. Each individual has a stake in Trans Liberation.” Leslie Feinberg

The first gay rights liberation organization was called that Scientific Humanitarian Committee. It was founded by Dr Magnus Hirschfeld in Germany. He was Gay, Jewish and a Socialist in 1897. His research found that gender expression and orientation were not automatically linked; this means that not all trans people are gay or lesbian.

Transgender people can be Heterosexual, Bisexual, Gay or Asexual.

The Stonewall Rebellion happened on June 28, 1969 in New York, Greenwich Village. After years of being beat up, dragged out of bars and arrested, Queer folks fought back against the police brutally until the police had to retreat.

The histories of Transgender people and Women are interconnected. Societies that degrade Women and Trans folks are divided into classes by men that divide people by a rigid categorization of gender and sex.

Gender is expressed differently in different nationalities, cultures, regions and classes.

“I am heartened by the realization that hatred of sex and gender variation is not rooted in human nature. The more I dig, the more I find that although what we think of as gender today has been expressed differently in diverse historical periods, cultures, regions, nationalities, and classes. There appears to have always been gender diversity in the human population.” Leslie Feinberg

I found this book to be very empowering. Although I am not transgendered, I am queer. Many feminists do believe that transgender females do not belong in the feminist movement, but I think this is wrong. I think at the heart of true feminism, true equality is the desire, where men and women are absolutely equal; this would extend to ALL genders. Some queer folks do not include transgender people in their fight for equality too, and this is absolutely incorrect. In a perfect world, I believe all people are worthy of the pursuit of happiness, regardless of sex or gender or orientation. While we must fight for our civil rights, transgender humans fit in the LGBTQIA+ and Women’s movements. I am thankful to Leslie Feinberg for sharing her story so bravely and helping me to understand more deeply, issues I have not experienced myself, so that I can more deeply empathize with my Queer family.

I got this book from my personal collection you can get your own copy of Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg on Amazon.

Transgender Warriors : Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis RodmanTransgender Warriors : Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman by Leslie Feinberg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Transgender Warriors is a book about the lives of transgender people, including the author, Leslie Feinberg. Feinberg researched throughout history to find how humans have changed from communal living, led by women that made room for many types of love and genders, to the colonialized version of life we now live that divides people by classes, sex, gender, religion, race, skin color, and disability all in the name of money and politics. Feinberg helps to define some of the ways that people have belittled transgender people and ways that these warriors have risen above the criticism. This is a powerful book and I highly recommend it to people that want to empathize more fully with humanity.

For anyone reading this that isn’t a Christian, unapologetically, I am a Christian, but I believe there is room for lots of beliefs and religions in the world. It is not my intent to offend people with different beliefs than I have and I would be open to open-minded conversations with no goals of changing anyone’s mind, but sharing information. If you are interested in becoming a Christian…Do you know Jesus? Do want the Holy Spirit to fill you and give you understanding and salvation? Ask Him. Want someone to pray with you? Contact me.

If you would like to know Jesus as your friend, but want to make this amazing commitment by yourself please pray something like this: Thank you Jesus that You are the Son of God, the God that created heaven and earth. Thank you Jesus that You came to earth in the form of a man so that You would be able to empathize with my humanity. Thank You that You did this in order to fulfill the promises You made at the foundation of the world. I realize that I am a sinner and do things that hurt myself and keep myself away from you. 5 Books for December 2024

2024 was so full of blessings and opportunities to grow. Many people might not agree with me but I see challenges as opportunities to see my strengths and where I need to get stronger or let others help me. Fretting or stay angry is a waste of time. Time I could be doing better things, like reading! I found some great books to read this month, in fact I am almost out of my personal books to read. I will have to head back to the library soon, what a problem to have. 🙂

Now without further ado 5 Books for December 2024:

Taylor the Tooting Turkey by Humor Heals Us

Taylor the Tooting Turkey: A Story About a Turkey Who Toots (Farts) (Farting Adventures Book 1)Taylor the Tooting Turkey: A Story About a Turkey Who Toots (Farts) by Humor Heals Us
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Taylor the Tooting Turkey by Humor Heals Us is not my favorite farting fiction children’s book. There is really no story but there is some humor. What might be helpful is the definition of the different types of farts the gives, if you need this information. The illustrations are cheerful and endearing.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Taylor the Tooting Turkey by Humor Heals Us on Amazon.

In this classic children’s fiction picture book, Corduroy wants a name, an outfit and a boy or girl to want him for Christmas and luckily for him, Corduroy accidentally makes all of his wishes come true. This heart-warming story is made even more special by illustrations by Jody Wheeler.

The Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle

The Raggedy Ann StoriesThe Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I was a little girl I had a copy of The Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle. I also had my mother’s Raggedy Ann doll. She was a special doll in my family. It was special to me to reread these heart-warming children’s classic fiction picture book, which included 7 short stories: Raggedy Ann Learns a Lesson, Raggedy Ann and the Kite, Raggedy Ann Rescues Fido, Raggedy Ann and the Strange Dolls, Raggedy Ann and the Kittens, Raggedy Ann and the Chickens, and Raggedy Ann’s New Sisters. Out of all the stories, my favorite is Raggedy Ann and the Strange Dolls.

All the stories have lovely morals and simple beauty and fantasy to them, but Raggedy Ann and the Strange Dolls is about some new fancy dolls that come to the nursery. Annabel Lee and Thomas, named after Marcella’s aunt and uncle, who sent the dolls to Marcella, thought they were better than all the other older dolls because they have real hair and fashionable clothes, while the other dolls have been well-loved and have some wear and tear, especially Raggedy Ann, who was Marcella’s grandmother’s doll and has a simple painted face, cotton stuffed body and yarn for hair.

By the end of the story, the two new dollies learn why Raggedy Ann is a favorite of all the dolls and Marcella, not because Raggedy Ann is more beautiful on the outside, but because of her great wisdom and love towards everyone. I love that this story shows that a beautiful heart is the most important feature in a person.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle on Amazon.

Lightening Strikes Twice by Marci Ridlon

Lightning Strikes Twice (Woodsey Adventure)Lightning Strikes Twice by Marci Ridlon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Papa, Mama and Milkweed are the Woodsey family. This family of squirrels live in the forest in a lovely home, high in a tree in nature. But one night there is a terrible storm that forces them to leave. The family works together to save some of their tools and possessions and their very lives as they leave their home before lightening strikes twice.

This sweet animal family loves each other and their new friend, Goodgrub Mole, as they learn how to relocate and stay positive during stressful times. Lightening Strikes Twice by Marci Ridlon is endearing and educational and the illustrations by Cyndy Szekeres are adorable.

I had this book as a child and I still love it! This children’s fiction picture book is a great addition to story time.

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of Lightening Strikes Twice by Marci Ridlon on Amazon.

Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Champions by Brendan Flynn

Seattle Seahawks: Super Bowl Champions (Today's MVPs and Champions)Seattle Seahawks: Super Bowl Champions by Brendan Flynn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My wife loves the Seattle Seahawks and since we have been married I have bought so much regalia that I have told her she is not allowed to fall in love with another sports team. When I bought Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Champions by Brendan Flynn, I didn’t realize it was a children’s history book, I believe it is grade 1-2 level because it has 9 chapters, but the chapters are only 1 page long and easy to read. She has given this nonfiction book her thumbs up!

The Seattle Seahawks were formed in 1976 by mostly unwanted players. Their first year, they lost 12 of 14 games.Their success didn’t grow until 1983 when they got a new coach named Chuck Knox, who had been known to have success with other teams. The Seahawks finished 9-7 that year.

Pete Carroll became coach in 2010. People loved his positive attitude. He used the draft to choose strong players.

“The Seahawks played the New Orleans Saints on December 2, 2013. The home fans set a record for noise. The crowd was louder than a military jet taking off from an air craft carrier!”

In 2014, the Seattle Seahawks won their first Super Bowl.

This book has good information and great pictures. I think it is a great read for young readers.

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Champions by Brendan Flynn on Amazon.

As 2025 begins, I hope that you are surprised with a great number of good things to bless you. Some of the best things are very small but bring great amounts of joy if you see them and appreciate them…like my wife who is holding on for dear life to her Seattle Seahawks chance at going to the Super Bowl. It could happen. It did in 2014. Happy New Year!

Be blessed.

5 Books for October 2024

Books can take you all sorts of adventures. Some of these books I am sharing this month were books I read as a child. Some of them I read to my preschool students or nieces and nephews. Some of them are brand new to me but they remind me of other people in my life. Books are so important. I love to watch children fall in love with books because I know that books not only increase our ability to imagine new places but they teach us self reliance and resilience. If you can imagine yourself doing something, you can make it happen. I hope you are fostering love for books with the young people in your life.

The Raggedy Andy Stories by Johnny Gruelle

The Raggedy Andy Stories: The Very First Raggedy Andy StoriesThe Raggedy Andy Stories: The Very First Raggedy Andy Stories by Johnny Gruelle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I grew up with Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy and I had The Raggedy Andy Stories by Johnny Gruelle as a child. Reading this collection of children’s classics fiction stories was heartwarming and nostalgic. Out of the 8 stories: How Raggedy Andy Came, The Nursery Dance, The Spinning Wheel, The Taffy Pull, The Rabbit Chase, Raggedy Andy’s Smile, The Wooden Horse, and Making Angels in the Snow, I have to say the 6th story, Raggedy Andy’s Smile is my favorite. I loved my dolls. I loved to help them or other children’s dolls or blankets when their smile wore off or some other repair needed to be made. I love that Santa came to the rescue of all of Marcella’s dolls and repaired them all because she loved her dolls and played with them every day.

This beautiful fantasy picture book is filled with love and friendship and is perfect for any story time. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Raggedy Andy Stories by Johnny Gruelle on Amazon.

Fairy the Farting Unicorn by Humor Heals Us

Fairy the Farting Unicorn : A Funny Kid's Book About a Unicorn Who Farts (Farting Adventures 10)Fairy the Farting Unicorn : A Funny Kid’s Book About a Unicorn Who Farts by Humor Heals Us
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fairy the Farting Unicorn by Humor Heals Us is so fun to read. It book every rule about bodily functions my nana ever taught me, but I think, even Nana would have laughed at Fairy’s floral scented flatulence, especially when she blasted the animal poachers to France! Even though the word fart was consider the “F” word when I was growing up, I have found that farting happens and children, especially my nephews, love books about farting, so I was excited to add this book to my collection fiction picture books and I have laughed through my first reading of this great fantasy. The rainbow colored illustrations are exceptional too!

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Fairy the Farting Unicorn by Humor Heals Us on Amazon.

A Treasury of Curious George by Margret & H.A. Rey

A Treasury of Curious GeorgeA Treasury of Curious George by Margret Rey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Treasury of Curious George by Margret & H.A. Rey is a collection of 8 stories that include: Curious George Takes a Train, Curious George Visits a Toys Store, Curious George and the Dump Truck, Curious George and the Birthday Surprise, Curious George Goes Camping, Curious George Goes to a Costume Party, Curious George Visits the Library, and Curious George in the Big City. All stories were fun and educational as we watch a little monkey, named George, be curious and get into all kinds of adventure, but if I had to pick one favorite, it would be Curious George and the Dump Truck.

In Curious George and the Dump Truck the story starts out with ducks and ducks are one of my favorite animals. George likes them too and since he had never seen ducks before, he followed them to the park where he found a dump truck. The workers were on their lunch break. George really reminds me of my nephew, Kaison, who doesn’t have a lot of words yet, but he has enough energy and curiosity for 10 children and that can lead to anything, much like the creative situations that George often finds himself in. He doesn’t mean to cause trouble, but messes often happen and there always some fun.

The illustrations in this classic fiction picture book are in the style of H.A. Rey, by Vipah International and Martha Weston and they are heartwarming and fun. George makes any story time fun.

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of A Treasury of Curious George by Margret & H.A. Rey on Amazon.

Walter the Farting Dog Goes On a Cruise by William Katzwinkle, Glenn Murray & Elizabeth Gundy

Walter the Farting Dog Goes on a CruiseWalter the Farting Dog Goes on a Cruise by William Kotzwinkle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I always wonder why Walter’s family take him on adventures since his atrocious gas always gets him alienated from society, but I love that they adore him enough to try to include him. Although one might see Walter’s horrendous gas as a handicap, it always turns out to save the day, just as it does in Walter the Farting Dog Goes On a Cruise by William Katzwinkle, Glenn Murray & Elizabeth Gundy. As always Walter is isolated because no one, not even the other animals, can stand the smell of his farting, but when the computer system goes out on the cruise ship, leaving Walter on a dingy attached to the back of the boat worked out for everyone as some especially powerful farts project Walter and the ship directly into port right on time, saving the day even with some humor.

The fun and colorful illustrations by Audrey Colman really add to the enjoyment of this children’s fiction picture book.

Book Review: The Truths We Hold: An American Journey by Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris is a strong woman. She is not a person that lets moss grow under her feet, but a woman of action. Raised by immigrants, her mother from India and her father from Jamaica, Harris’ family instilled a powerful work ethic and love for education, the arts, civil rights, feminism and food. In this autobiography, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey by Kamala Harris, we read her nonfiction memoir about her growing up as an immigrant daughter that becomes a lawyer and leader in politics.

“Above all, I rise today with a sense of gratitude for all those upon whose shoulders we stand. For me, it starts with my mother, Shyamala, Harris…And I know she’s looking down on us today. And, knowing my mother, she’s probably saying, ‘Kamala, what on earth is going on down there? We have got to stand up for our values!’”

Harris chose to be a prosecuting attorney because in her life, she wanted to help people. In her history, when people needed to know what to do or have greater understanding, they always called lawyers. Harris has always used her position to try to lift up everyone, not just the influential.

“There are many ongoing struggles in this country—against racism and sexism, against discrimination based on religion, nationalism, and sexual orientation. Each of these struggles is unique. Each deserves its own attention and effort. And it would be wrong to suggest that the differences don’t matter, or that one solution or one fight will alone solve them all. But at the same time, we should embrace the point that King made to Chavez—that what these struggles have in common is of freedom of basic human rights.”

During her career, Harris has held the offices of Prosecuting Attorney, District Attorney, Attorney General of California, California State Senator, Senate Intelligence Committee, Homeland Security Committee, Judiciary Committee, Vice President and she now is running for President of the United States of America, but she would probably say that the most important job she has held was Public Servant. Throughout her career she has helped in the following fields:

  • Victims of Sexual Assault
  • Children’s Issues
  • Drug Crimes
  • Bank Fraud and Housing Crisis
  • Civil Rights
  • Truancy and Family Law
  • Transnational Crime (Drugs and Sex Trafficking)
  • Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals
  • Opioids
  • Public Education
  • Affordable Housing
  • Climate Change
  • Infrastructure
  • Cyberwarfare

In 2014, she married the love of her life, Doug Emhoff. Together with his ex-wife, Kerstin, they co-parent their children Cole and Ella. The kids didn’t like the idea of calling Harris a step-mother, so they call her Momala. Family is very important to Harris. Many people have tried to say she isn’t a mother, however, she may not have given birth, she has the determination, drive and passion that mothers have. She wakes up every day and gives it her all to make sure that nothing is wasted; that all people are heard as well as they can be. She is not perfect, but nobody is. What she is is worthy.

I wasn’t totally sold on Kamala Harris in the beginning of her run for president. But I had to be honest, I hadn’t given her a real chance. I didn’t really know anything about her, so I started to pay attention. After reading her book, I am glad to make her my choice for president of the United States of America. She is a strong and steady person. She is capable. She is intense and willing to listen. She is worthy.

Book Review: Mindset The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D

This article was originally posted on WellnessWorksNW.com on 9/23/2024. In June I was inspired to join a week long group called Weakless Week hosted by Jason Seib. During this week where Seib inspired the group to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to give up junk food for good and commit to exercise forever because that is how we love ourself, he mentioned this self help book, Mindset The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D. He felt that this book would help us understand the value of knowing the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset and teaching us to work towards living with a growth mindset. A Fixed or Growth Mindset can be seen in Business Leadership, Home, in Parenting and in Personal Relationships. A fixed mindset is a belief that your qualities (talents, aptitudes, interests, temperament, morals) are set in stone and can’t be changed. People with fixed mindsets are usually wrong about their abilities because they don’t know what they are capable of. A growth mindset is a belief that our basic qualities (intelligence, personality, character) are things we can cultivate through our efforts, strategies and help from others. People that are growth oriented are open to learning, they believe they can develop themselves. Growth mindset seeks challenge and they tend to thrive even in failure. In learning, failure, to a fixed mindset person can be a traumatic setback, but for a growth mindset person it can be a perfect opportunity to grow and become better at productivity. The belief is that are not a failure as long as you are learning from your mistakes and taking ownership. If you are blaming someone else the process of learning is over. Blaming is a trait of a fixed mindset learner. Fixed mindset people with depression tend to shut down because when you measure yourself by failure you lose coping resources. Growth mindset people with depression tend to try harder and be determined to keep going as well a they can because they believe their abilities can be expanded. In their opinion, a fixed mindset person doesn’t need to ask for help because losing is not an option. They can’t handle losing. Asking for help is a sign of weakness. The idea of deficiencies is terrifying to them. A fixed mindset person relies on natural talent and they believe they don’t need to overcome challenges. Fixed mindset is ego driven and believes you are either somebody or nobody. Talent is needed to get you to the top but character is needed to keep you there.

Growth Mindset Beliefs:

  • overcoming shortfalls is exciting
  • practice makes perfect
  • using your personal strengths to overcome shortfalls is key
  • ordinary people can do extraordinary things with the right amount of effort and training
  • can talk themselves from losing to winning based on their past strengths
  • focuses on self-development, self-motivation and responsibility

Fixed Mindset in love

  • The ideal is instant, perfect and perpetual compatibility
  • Couples will agree on everything
  • Problems indicate character flaws that can’t be fixed
  • After rejection feels judged, bitter and vengeful

Growth Mindset in Love

  • All things can be developed
  • Communication happens, nothing is assumed
  • Problems can possibly be fixed
  • After rejection feels hurt, hopeful, forgiving, learning and moves on

Parenting

In parenting with a fixed versus growth mindset is important to consider situations and expectations. With children complimenting intelligence or speed might stunt their willingness to try hard things. Not being honest with constructive criticism might lead to wrongful blame. Encouraging hard work in weak areas and acknowledging hard work already done will build confidence. Remember learning is a process. Don’t judge. Teach. Success can knock you into a fixed mindset that tells you that you won because you have talent – not that you have to fight every time to win. Parents that respond to mistakes as opportunities to learn, pass on a growth mindset.

The Journey from fixed to growth mindset

  1. Embrace that we all have some fixed mindset traits.
  2. Become aware of triggers (Mine is competition)
  3. Give your fixed mindset personality a name (Mine is Stormie)
  4. Educate your fixed mindset. Be supportive of its roll but let it know we are going to try this anyway and communicate as well as we can with those around us.
  5. Daily consider growth opportunities for myself and for others around me.
Fixed mindset people often have an internal monologue that is focused on judging. Where a growth mindset person is often thinking about what they can learning from an experience, how can they improve, how can I help my partner do this better? Life is about the journey. Some days we do better than others and that is ok but keep moving forward. Mindset The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D was a very helpful book to read and I got a lot out of it that I can relate to many parts of my life. I think it is a good nonfiction book for anyone to read that wants to sharpen their personal development skills. I got this book from my personal collection you can get your own copy of Mindset The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D on Amazon.

Read My Review on GoodReads:

Mindset: The New Psychology of SuccessMindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck My rating: 4 of 5 stars Mindset is often the reason we are successful and in Mindset The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D, Dweck talks about the difference between fixed and growth mindsets and how they make a difference in the outcomes of our lives. A Fixed Mindset is the belief that our talents, aptitudes, interests, temperament, morals are set and can’t be changed. A Growth Mindset is the belief that our intelligence, personality, character can be developed through education and practice. Most people have a mixture of both types of mindsets throughout their life but the book illustrates that the Growth Mindset is the goal as it has the greater room for possibility. 5 Books for September 2024

Reading can be so fulfilling. In fact, the 5 books, I read yesterday for this post, have put me over my yearly goal on GoodReads. I had a goal of 72 books for this year and I am at 73 books now; that is 20 books ahead of schedule, according to GoodReads. That is awesome and I even factored in the 5 books I would read every month for this post. I must have really found some good books this year! I look forward to my children’s books because they are usually less complicated than my adult books. I highly recommend reading children’s books just for the stress relief. So without further ado…Here are 5 Books for September 2024:

What is Given From the Heart by Patricia C. McKissack

What Is Given from the HeartWhat Is Given from the Heart by Patricia C. McKissack
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What is Given From the Heart by Patricia C. McKissack is a heartwarming children’s fiction story that draws you in and fills your heart with love. You feel the curiosity and hope that James Otis has even as he deals with the death of his father and he wants to help his neighbor, Sarah, feel better after her home has burnt. This book is about community and sharing and taking care of each other even in poverty. I was overwhelmed by the gentle friendship everyone shared. This is a very special book.

The illustrations by April Harrison add to the simple magic of the picture book. Although this story takes place in black culture this story can take place in any family setting.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of What is Given From the Heart by Patricia C. McKissack on Amazon.

Curious George Takes a Job by H. A. Rey

Curious George Takes a JobCurious George Takes a Job by H.A. Rey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

All Curious George books are full of adventure but I think Curious George Takes A Job by H. A. Rey tops them all! If you don’t know George, he is a little monkey that gets himself in all kinds of humorous situations. In this story, George starts out by breaking out of the zoo and leaving all the animals behind. Next he is washing dishes in a restaurant, washing windows, painting an apartment, breaking his leg in a fall, which lands him in the hospital, which is how his friend, the man in the yellow hat, finds him to have him star in a feature film. George is charming and curious, of course and this is why this fiction children’s classic picture book is perfect for story time.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Curious George Takes A Job by H. A. Rey on Amazon.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love the simple poetry of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. I especially love the colorful art by Eric Carle. This particular copy is a large board book so it can be cleaned which is another plus. This book is about animals, colors, repetition and differences. This is a great children’s classic fiction book for toddlers and preschoolers to practice their talking and asking questions and rhyming.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. on Amazon.

Fritz the Farting Reindeer by Humor Heals Us

Fritz the Farting Reindeer: A Story About a Reindeer Who Farts (Farting Adventures Book 3)Fritz the Farting Reindeer: A Story About a Reindeer Who Farts by Humor Heals Us
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fritz the Farting Reindeer by Humor Heals Us is an adorable story about a reindeer with a farting problem. This year Comet and Cupid can’t be in the line-up with Santa to deliver toys for Christmas and so Fritz is trying really hard to get Santa’s attention without blowing it. Even though he couldn’t hide his gas, in the end, Santa still chose him. Fritz was so excited! I think this story is one that a lot of children will really enjoy!

I got this book from my own personal collection. You can get your own copy of Fritz the Farting Reindeer by Humor Heals Us on Amazon.

Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges

Through My Eyes: Ruby BridgesThrough My Eyes: Ruby Bridges by Ruby Bridges
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I bought Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges, I didn’t think I was buying a children’s book but when it came, I was surprised. After reading this 61 page history book about segregation and integration and the autobiography of the first grade, Ruby Bridges, who happens to be Black, I still feel it is not for young readers. It is a powerful tool for teaching an important part of our cultural history in the viewpoint of a child, which has left me overwhelmed with emotions; much like I have read a much larger book in only a few minutes.

The Civil Rights Movement has come so far and this book illustrates many of its very important first steps. This picture book is not comprised of illustrations but photographs of real events as you would expect with any memoir. The descriptions and writing in this nonfiction biography are well done. Honestly, I don’t want to explain some of the things in this book to the children that come to my home and I don’t plan to keep it. Some of the details are too much for a casual conversation and I think they should be left for middle school or high school age children.

I have to say I was really surprised by Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges. It is a good book but I think it will serve us better somewhere else. I think after I get it back from my sister, Jamie Holloway, I will donate it to Longview Public Library. If they can’t us it, maybe someone will want to buy it and they will be blessed that way. It is always good to share.

Be blessed.

Book Review: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

I believe that Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is one of the saddest stories I have ever read. The first time I ever heard about this book, I was reading The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams. This classic fiction novel was on the reading list in this book; since then I have also seen it on a couple more literary must read lists, so I purchased it and made sure to read it. I don’t believe the book mentions any dates for reference, but it must take place around the time it was written, 1938. I suspect this because people had cars but no TVs in their homes, women were educated but men still did most of the talking.

“I believe there is a theory that men and women emerge finer and stronger after suffering, and that to advance in this or any world, we must endure ordeal by fire.” Chapter 2

Rebecca was the name of the first wife of Mr. de Winter. Although Rebecca is dead, she is still the main character throughout this mystery. Although the narrator and secondary character is the second Mrs. de Winter and we never hear her first name throughout this entire romance thriller.

Rebecca is an intense book. It is well written. I was compelled to continue reading it. There was growth in the characters, especial the second Mrs. de Winter, but it was a stressful story. I am not in love with the ending. It doesn’t feel finished.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier on Amazon.

Read My Review on GoodReads:

RebeccaRebecca by Daphne du Maurier
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I related a lot to the narrator of this book. As a young woman I was very shy and not able to communicate or feel capable of knowing how to make myself known. The second Mrs. de Winter was a very young lady when she married her much older husband and she had no idea the history of the family she was marrying into or even the history of her husband. She had a lot of learning and growing to do and she was forced to do it or lose him. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is a complicated and sad story of mystery and manipulation.

Book Review: The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning

In all the world we will never find a love like what we receive from God. I knew that before I read The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning because in all the world I have only met a few people that even came close to God’s ability to accept me and know me and love me even partially as well as He loves me. This book celebrates this truth and encourages us to reach out to our broken, imperfect neighbors and love each other anyway because it is what God does. We are all given the opportunity to be un-entitled beggars able to receive God’s mercy.

“My deepest awareness of myself is that I am deeply loved by Jesus Christ and I have done nothing to earn it or deserve it.” Brennan Manning

When we accept our humanity, we declare our freedom from hunger for power or acceptance from others because we are more secure in ourself. We no longer fear criticism, because we accept our limitations. When we trust in God, who loves us consistently and faithfully nurtures us to be free disciples we are able to foster other loving people.

Jesus hung out with ragamuffins. In Jewish culture, to share a meal is to declare friendship. In bible times, sinners (ragamuffins) were outcasts and it was illegal to mix with them so Jesus was breaking the law and breaking the structure of Jewish society. Jesus was the first to treat ragamuffins with dignity and show them they were acceptable to God. :

  • the poor
  • the lepers
  • the blind
  • the hungry
  • the lame
  • sinners
  • prostitutes
  • tax collectors
  • the persecuted
  • the downtrodden
  • the captives
  • those possessed with unclean spirits
  • all who labor
  • all who are heavy burdened
  • the people that didn’t know the law
  • the crowds
  • the little ones
  • the least
  • the last
  • the lost sheep of the house of Isreal

Imposters in the Spirit always prefer appearance to reality: Self deception sells our sinfulness and prevents us from seeing that we are all ragamuffins. The self-righteous place their trust in the works of the law and closed their hearts to the gift and message of grace.

The poor is spirit (Matthew 5:3) are all those who rely entirely on the mercy of God and accept the gospel of grace. The poor in spirit are like children. Children are unselfish and incapable of pretense — they just accept the gift of the kingdom of God in faith. But we are called to be like children. Children had no worth in the bible times. So to be like a child is a big call. Christians must be willing to be totally humbled to accept oneself as unimportant and of little account. If we maintain that open-mindedness of children, we challenge fixed ideas of established structures — even our own. An open-mind believer realizes that in reality, truth and Jesus Christ are incredibly open-ended.

“Honesty is such a precious commodity that its seldom found in the world or the church. Honesty requires the truthfulness to admit the attachment and addictions that control our attention, dominate our consciousness, and function as false gods.” Brennan Manning

Repentance is not just what we do for forgiveness — it is an expression of gratitude because forgiveness can’t be earned. Once forgiven, our past is irrelevant before God. God is in the now — in the present. God is not our enemy. He is not intent on trying, tempting or testing us. He does not promote suffering and pain. Jesus teaches us that a relationship with God drives out fear, mistrust, anxiety and guilt. A true relationship is hopeful, joyous, trusting and compassionate. Human love is a faint shadow of God’s love because of it’s passion and emotion — it is a thin echo of the love of God. Authentic Christianity leads us to treat others with love and communion. It should lead the Christian to maturity, personality and reality, and reverence for the mystery of humanity in spirituality.

Jesus told us not to fear because fear was useless. He told us to trust and have joy and share this with others.

Some Christians want to be slaves. It is easier to let others make the decisions or rely on the law than to be truly honest with God and accept our limitations in religion and the gift of grace.

At this end of this book are 19 inspirational bible studies. I wish that I had been doing them while I read the book. Since I think this is a book that is to be read again and I again, I will keep this in mind when I read it next time. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to grow in their relationship with Christ and their understanding of theology.

The Ragamuffin GospelThe Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have tried to read this book for over 20 years. In fact this is not the first copy of this book I have bought. Now was the time for this book and I am glad I finally read it because over the years, in my personal study of the bible, I have come to find that my beliefs, which seem to be different that what I was taught growing up, are exactly what are in this book. I am thankful that I can never earn the mercy and forgiveness I have got from God. I love that God is so in love with me that I can learn that kind of love from Him. That I can even try to share that kind of love with others. I know that my version of love is just a shadow of His, but I am glad to be free from the law and to live in His grace. This book is such a gift.

Book Review: Rosa Parks In Her Own Words by Susan Reyburn

Rosa Parks was an amazing woman and what is special about this biography put out by the Library of Congress is that it is full of pictures of her memorabilia and writings. She was an avid writer and notetaker and would write on anything she had on hand. I find this fascinating because I do this too.

Rosa Parks was active in helping people well before the day she chose to not get off the bus. She also:

  • Educated voters
  • Supported activists
  • Campaigned for political candidates
  • Fought segregation
  • Sought justice for victims of sexual assault, abduction and gang rape

Rosa Parks lived for freedom not just for herself but for others. She wanted all people to be treated well.

“I would rather be lynched than live to be mistreated.” Rosa Parks

Many people had been abused as they protested bus segregation before Rosa Parks. Her actions were not planned but there was a lot to fuel the fire of history. Rose had just reached her tipping point on that day.

  • Brown v. Board of Education which said that segregation of schools was unconstitutional
  • Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl had been roughed up and dragged off a Montgomery bus for not giving up her seat to a white person
  • Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old boy has been murdered by the KKK for a comment no one heard him make

Because of Parks’ calm demeanor and good reputation the president of the NAACP chose her to be the face of resistance. Many things happened that were a help to the civil rights movement because Rosa Parks chose to stay seated one day on the bus. On June 6, 1956 Browder v. Gayle stated that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Civil rights leaders were expecting pushback from Alabama and they got it. Alabama appealed on November 13, 1965 but the lower court upheld the ruling. Alabama appealed a second time but it was denied and Federal Marshalls handed Mayer Gayle official notice on December 20, 1956.

“I want to be remembered as a person who wanted to be free and wanted others to be free.” Rosa Parks

This is the first nonfiction book that I have read about Rosa Parks but she also wrote books about her life and I intend to read those too:

  • Quiet Strength
  • My Story
  • Dear Mrs. Parks: A Dialogue with Today’s Youth

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Rosa Parks In Her Own Words by Susan Reyburn on Amazon.

Rosa Parks was a humble and great woman. She worked hard to serve others for the betterment of the civil rights movement because she wanted to be remembered as a person that wanted to be free and wanted others to be free. She was not wealthy and did not ask for riches for anything she ever did but she has gone down in history has an amazing force for good. This book, put out by the Library of Congress is full of notes and personal memorabilia that she kept while on her journey towards freedom for us all.

Harold’s Trip to the Sky by Cricket Johnson

Harold's Trip to the Sky (Harold, #3)Harold’s Trip to the Sky by Crockett Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love Harold and I love his adventures. Harold’s Trip to the Sky by Cricket Johnson is a sweet and classic children’s fiction story that takes you along with Harold and his purple crayon as he attempts to visit the moon, but misses and lands on Mars instead. Don’t worry, in this space fantasy Harold still makes it home in time for breakfast. I love how Harold talks about what people are afraid of and he bravely faces them with his art. I think this is my favorite Harold and the Purple Crayon picture book.

Make Way for the Ducklings by Robert McCloskey

Make Way for DucklingsMake Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I remember having Make Way for the Ducklings by Robert McCloskey on my bookshelf when I was a child. I had an aunt and uncle who lived in Boston, where this fiction story takes place and they had sent the book to us. I don’t remember the story though. It made reading this children’s classic, like new today and I am glad I have this book to share with my great niece and nephews. I love how this bird family, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard looked for the perfect place, free from foxes, turtles and other animals, bicycles and other things with wheels to raise their ducklings. I also love how when the ducks were ready for their first adventure, the police were ready to make way for the ducklings. This is a perfect family picture book.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Make Way for the Duckling by Robert McCloskey on Amazon.

It is great to see Corduroy continue on with new artists! In this children’s classic story, Corduroy finds out that Lisa’s birthday is coming and he wants to find the perfect gift for her. But on the way he gets lost. With the help of new friends, Lisa finds him, which is she really wanted all along. This precious family story is the perfect addition to story time. Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble at the Yard Sale by William Katzwinkle and Glenn Murray

Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble At the Yard SaleWalter the Farting Dog: Trouble At the Yard Sale by William Kotzwinkle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Surprisingly, Walter’s family brought him to the yard sale and wondered why no one came to their yard sale, not even other animals. If you know about Walter, you know he is a dog with terrible, smelly gas. Walter probably should have stayed inside for the day but where is the humor in that? Walter’s amazing farting was so powerful, he only caught the attention of a wannabe bank robber with extra stinky crime on his mind, in Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble at the Yard Sale by William Katzwinkle and Glenn Murray. I was shocked that Father was willing to part with Walter for only $10 but in the end, Walter made his way home and saved the day. The fun illustrations by Audrey Colman really make this children’s fiction picture book extra fun!

Book Review: Bathsheba by Jill Eileen Smith

“Bathsheba looked directly toward the threshing floor and the king’s store house directly behind the palace. David was giving a staggering amount to this work [the building of the temple]. But she would expect nothing less of him. He was a man devoted, consumed, in his passion for the Lord his God. A generous man who had learned the gratitude that comes of sins forgiven.”

Bathsheba was King David’s eighth wife, but he was not her first husband. She was originally the wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of the King’s Thirty most trusted captains. Uriah was loyal to the rules King David, the king of Israel, established for his soldiers during war, which included celibacy. Wars could last months and Bathsheba was often very lonely.

During the beginning of this biblical fiction book, King David’s favorite wife, Abigail, died after giving birth to their third child and King David was very distraught. He stayed behind from a battle and eventually met Bathsheba on her roof. They were both attracted to each other, but they stayed away from each other, knowing they were married.

Still depressed, King David, stayed back from another war. His wives quarrels had become too much for him, Abigail had often been the peacekeeper. King David and Bathsheba kept bumping into each other until one night he sent for her.

In all the four years Bathsheba was married to Uriah, she had never conceived. Bathsheba had grown accustomed to the idea that she was barren. However one evening with the king brought forth a child. When Bathsheba told the king, he called Uriah home from war and suggested that he go home to his wife. After two nights, Uriah stayed faithful to his men at war and slept at the castle’s front gate with the guards. He did not want to fail his men.

Knowing that by the time Uriah returned from war, the pregnancy could not be covered up and the consequences for adultery was death, King David ordered Uriah the Hittite to the front line, where certain death came. After the allotted time of grieving, King David took Bathsheba as his bride.

The birth of David and Bathsheba’s first son brought the attention of Nathan the profit with a message from God. The truth was revealed and David repented. God forgave David and Bathsheba but He took their first son. God also said that sword would never leave his house, while he was alive.

Years later, after David and Bathsheba had know the forgiveness of God for their forbidden romance and raised their 4 sons, King David announced his son Solomon as his successor. He had never know war and was the one to bring peace to Israel. King Solomon would go down in history as being able to do things that King David would never have been able to do.

Bathsheba by Jill Eileen Smith is #3 in a three part historical fiction series of the Wives of King David: Michal, Abigail and Bathsheba are wonderful novels. Each book is powerful and can stand on their own. Michal, telling about David in his youth and running from King Saul. Abigail tells of King David as his kingdom is established. Bathsheba shares about his last years. King David was a strong and passionate leader and these three of many wives helped him in so many ways. I highly recommend these Christian fiction books on their own or as the series.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Bathsheba by Jill Eileen Smith on Amazon.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bathsheba by Jill Eileen Smith showcases the humanity of King David and Bathsheba and the love and mercy that God offers for His own pleasure and purpose. I found myself having compassion on both characters because there was so much sadness and loneliness around them. I could understand how they might have been able to cling to each other, even though they had their own spouses. Among the pain there is growth and forgiveness and that is the theme of life. I truly enjoyed the Wives of King David series, this book being #3. I highly recommend this fiction book to anyone that likes to read, even if you are not a Christian.

Book Review: Abigail by Jill Eileen Smith

Abigail by Jill Eileen Smith is an amazing historical fiction novel based on the story of King David in the bible. Abigail was David’s third wife, but before she was King David’s wife, she was betrothed to Nabal, a cruel, rich man who had inherited debt owed to his father, by Abigail’s father. Both Abigail’s father and brother worked for Nabal and Abigail was promised to him as soon as she was old enough to marry.

The marriage was filled with abuse and infidelity but Abigail was honorable to her husband in order to honor God. When David’s men protected Nabal’s livestock and required some pay, Nabal refused. Knowing this would not end well, Abigail ordered her servants to pack mules with provisions and she met David on his way to seek revenge. David respected how Abigail honored him and was thankful for the payment. There were mutual feelings on both sides at their first meeting.

As Abigail tried to tell her husband how she had saved his life and corrected his mistake, Nabal was about to strike her, but God would not allow it and struck Nabal down, who died a few days later. When David found out, he asked permission from Abigail’s father, who had joined his camp earlier, for her hand and once he agreed, David offered to marry Abigail, knowing that a woman without a husband in Israel at that time was powerless, Abigail accepted.

Abigail knew she was David’s third wife and knew he would probably take more wives. She truly loved David and he truly loved her. David even admitted, he wished he had met her first, so she could be his only wife. Her love for the Lord and her wisdom were a great comfort to him. Out of all his wives, she was the easiest confidant and support.

But sharing King David was a true test of her strength and devotion. It was hard to bear the other wive’s complaints and to share his time among them and their children, but with God’s help they made it work.

Abigail is number 2 in the 3 part biblical fiction series of The Wives of King David. I can’t really compare this book to the first one: Michal. Abigail is it’s own story. Both books are wonderful in their own ways. Whether you are a Christian or not I believe that this story of romance and war is compelling and worth the read.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Abigail by Jill Eileen Smith on Amazon.

Abigail by Jill Eileen Smith is number two in a 3 part Christian Fiction series about The Wives of King David. Abigail was King David’s third wife and probably his favored because of her love for the Lord and her wise ways. She came to him while he was still living in the wilderness, hiding from King Saul’s murderous hunting and rose with him to the pinnacle of his success. The story of Abigail is full of history, romance, war and everything in between. I really enjoyed this book.

Book Review: Michal by Jill Eileen Smith

Michal by Jill Eileen Smith is biblical fiction and based on history as found in the bible; the story of the rise of King David.

“And suddenly she knew. A window to her soul opened, and Michal squirmed at the sight. What a bitter woman she’d become! She’d been so afraid Father’s demons would one day hound her steps that she never realized she’d given herself over to demons of her one.”

Michal wasn’t sure how to pray but she was not alone and Adonai led her through to repentance.

Michal was the youngest daughter of King Saul, the first king and once powerful ruler of Israel. But as Saul stopped honoring the Lord Most High, his success waned and he was known to have fits of madness. Only the music of David could soothe him. But there was word that David had been anointed as the next king by Samuel the priest and this hurt King Saul’s pride. He wanted his son to be king. But even Jonathan, the king’s son was willing to honor God’s will. As King Saul’s madness progressed he was willing to do anything to keep David away from the throne. However, Michal loved David and she did become his first wife. But as King Saul sought to kill David, he had to leave his bride behind as he fled. They were separated for 17 years before David could take his place on the throne and reclaim her, but much had changed for both of them.

I was so into this historical fiction book, I read all 382 pages in one day. I simply couldn’t put down the book. I highly recommend this novel on romance and war and everything in between to anyone that likes to read, especially if you enjoy Christian Fiction.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Michal by Jill Eileen Smith on Amazon.

Michal is a book about romance and war and life lived as the daughter of a king driven mad with jealousy while being the wife of the future king. Michal has a life of loss that has turned to bitterness but in the end she learns to turn to God for forgiveness and freedom from all the pain.

Michal by Jill Eileen Smith is an action packed book that keep the pages turning for me. This is not the first book by Smith that I have read and I look forward to reading more. I highly recommend her books to anyone that likes to read.

Book Review: The Last Black Unicorn by TIffany Haddish

I am sitting here and thinking about how I can really honor The Last Black Unicorn by TIffany Haddish. This autobiography is for adults. Your kids might want to read it but you might want to read it first because Haddish has had a challenging life and she doesn’t hide any of it, not the complexities of being black, homeless, female, abused or any other detail about her life as she shares her memoir of how she built her life from being an unwanted foster kid to being celebrity. Comedy is Haddish’s saving grace and what keeps her healthy. It is how she has made it through most of the hardest parts of her life. In high school she had the opportunity to meet Richard Pryor and he told her to always have fun and that advise has really paid off. This nonfiction biography is filled with pain, growth, but also humor and beauty as Haddish learns to value and trust herself.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Last Black Unicorn by TIffany Haddish on Amazon.

I have always enjoyed Tiffany Haddish in movies and in interviews. She is so authentic. This book is honest. She has had a hard life but she always chooses to have a good time. She has overcome a lot and worked hard to be where she is and this book tells how she did it. It was an easy read because you didn’t want to put it down. Haddish is an amazing and resilient woman.

Book Review: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg takes place between 1924 and 1988. It is a compilation of stories told by Mrs. Ninny Threadgood to Evelyn Couch when she comes with her husband to visit his mother at Rose Terrace Nursing Home. Evelyn is not welcomed by her mother-in-law so she finds herself visiting with a lively lady; Mrs. Threadgood, who loves to tell her about the amazing stories of Whistle Stop, Alabama, where she grew up and would like to return, as soon as her roommate Mrs. Otis gets comfortable and can handle her leaving.

For years, Fried Green Tomatoes has been my favorite movie. People have always told me that it was a queer friendly movie and I never saw it. But I have finally purchased the book and the book is now one of my favorites. Idgie (one of the main characters) was a lesbian and her mother knew it and if it bothered her, she didn’t let it show. She loved her daughter. she had a suit made for her to wear to her sister’s wedding instead of fighting her over a dress. When she saw that Idgie loved Ruth, she announced it at the family dinner table and sent the kids away for laughing at her. When Ruth came back to be with Idgie, leaving her abusive husband, pregnant, Idgie’s father gave her $500 to buy a business to support her family. To have the love and support from their family and community must have been amazing.

The nice thing about books is they have time to develop characters that movies don’t and even though it is fiction, I love how Flagg showed us the depth of each character and even brought us to the end of their life. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a classic contemporary story of love, empowerment, humor and southern flare. It is properly based in a historical fiction setting that is interesting all on its own but also relevant to all female literature readers as well. The book has everything in it to keep the pages turning mystery, murder, social injustice and lots of friendship. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (Whistle Stop #1)Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I have seen the movie several times. It is one of my favorites but the book, as always, has caught my heart and will be on my shelf for when I need to go to a more simple time. Fannie Flag wrote a masterpiece about topics that are not always easy to talk about but she did it so smoothly that I was overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions. People had always told me that two of the main characters, Ruth and Idgie were a couple, but I didn’t think they were more than great friends. The movie was not specific enough for me, but the book was blatant and I needed that. The entire book takes place between the 1920’s and the 1980’s while Mrs. Threadgood, a resident at the home where Evelyn Couch’s mother in law lives, tells Evelyn about her life in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Through the powerful stories, their relationship brings Mrs. Threadgood a new friend and helps Evelyn come to terms with middle age, menopause and herself. I could hardly put this book down!

Book Review: The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison

Descriptions of cultural, racial and physical differences that note “otherness,” these may also include wealth, class and gender; these differences are used to identify an outsider in order to define one’s self. Othering is only taught by example. We want to own and govern the other because of the emotions they provoke in our own self. When strangers walk away from us they sometimes take our good opinion of ourself with them.

These are all ideas that I pulled out The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison a Black author, known for her stories and essays on feminism, race, social justice and history. Morrison is a highly intelligent artist that writes fiction novels but weaves in nonfiction and deep cultural meaning into all her work. Her philosophy is to engage her readers in as much reality or purpose as they can bear.

The Origin of Others is a short but powerful read. I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison on Amazon.

Toni Morrison has always fascinated me and this book did not disappoint. The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison is about race and how people create “others” because of the emotions they created in our own self. Morrison talks about how she uses these concepts in her books and how she felt her readers responded to them. It is a short but honest read.

5 Books for July 2024

The best times I had as a kid were under the apple trees in my back yard. I would steal my mom’s old sheets and find some string or yarn and make a tent and live in there until I had to come out. When I wasn’t doing my doll’s hair I was reading. It was a great way to find shade and let my imagination run wild. I hope you are finding times with your kids making forts and reading piles of books. It is the best way to take adventures without going anywhere, especially when parents have to work and kids need something to do. I hear Longview Public Library has some great programs this summer too! Now for our 5 books for July 2024:

The Grouchy Lady Bug by Eric Carle

The Grouchy LadybugThe Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to admit I was a little grumpy when I started to read The Grouchy Lady Bug by Eric Carle and the art in this colorful children’s picture book really cheered me up. The grouchy lady bug has terrible manners and big emotions and feels like fighting but can’t seem to find the perfect animal to fight no matter where she goes on her adventure. This great classic family fiction book talks about time, size, shape, mathematics and manners and is even a board book so it can be washed a bit, making it a perfect story time book.

This is definitely a book to read again and again. In fact, apparently I read and reviewed this book last summer too! 🙂

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of The Grouchy Lady Bug by Eric Carle on Amazon.

A Picture for Harold's Room (Harold, #6)A Picture for Harold’s Room by Crockett Johnson

A Picture for Harold’s Room was written in 1960 by Crockett Johnson. It is a wonderful adventure story as Harold, wanting to create a picture for his room imagines an entire world where he becomes very large and also very small. This fiction children’s classic is the perfect pace for family story time before bed while Harold explores and explains the fantasy world he creates in this picture book. I really enjoyed it.

Dandelion by Don Freeman

DandelionDandelion by Don Freeman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Dandelion by Don Freeman is a story about a lion that is invited to a party and wants to change his look but his friends like him the way he is and don’t recognize him. This classic fiction book is full of different animals who all help Dandelion with his day of fashion or enjoy him at the party after they finally let him in. I think this picture book is a little short-sighted because no one lets Dandelion explore his new look but only likes him when he stays the same. Sometimes that happens in real life so maybe this book also brings value to story time.

I got this book from my personal collection. You can get your own copy of Dandelion by Don Freeman on Amazon.

Even Fairies FartEven Fairies Fart by Jennifer Stinson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Even Fairies Fart by Jennifer Stinson is a colorful children’s fantasy picture book that reminds us that no one is perfect. We all color outside the lines sometimes or make mistakes and it is ok. With wonderful words that rhyme, Stinson uses poetry to liven up story time with fiction that is as real as true life and farting. The illustrations by Rebecca Ashdown add humor and aid our imagination to take us to fun places. I recommend this book.
