As I read the books for this post, I was reminded over and over about how much I really enjoy reading children’s books. I love the simplicity of most stories and even in the history stories, how uncomplicated they are. The art is usually colorful or relaxing. It is a great way to separate oneself from the stress of adulting. What a gift you can give yourself to walk into a library and randomly walk up to shelves full of books and just grab whatever books call to you, knowing that if you don’t love it, it wont take long to finish it and most likely, you will like it. And then greet the librarian, check those books out. Walk out the door. Take pictures of the squirrel who lives in the tree outside and is used to tons of all kinds of people coming through the door outside his tree house and so he is used to flirting with anyone that stops to say hello. And even meeting a neighbor before you climb in your car and drive home to read those books because you want to.
So here is to reading 5 Books for February 2026…and yes…I know it’s late.

The Peanut Man by Carmen Agra Deedy is a beautiful children’s immigration story about how a little girl finds home. Her family was from Cuba. Every night, Emilio, the peanut man would walk through the streets, crying out: ¡Mani! or ¡Peanuts!
From her window, Coqui, would tuck her thumbs in her ears, stick out her tongue and make her silly sound: Thiddle, thiddle, thiddle!
And then Emilio would laugh and do it back!
There came a day that Coqui’s mom told her they must move to los Estados Unidos. Her father was not safe in Cuba, where opinions were not allowed.
It was hard, but her family relocated and started their new life. Coqui made new friends. She learned English. She learned new sports games. But Coqui was still homesick. One thing helped; she listened to baseball games on the radio with her dad.
One day Papi surprised her with tickets for her birthday to see her favorite player, Hank Aaron. When they got to the stadium, it was very hot and there were many smells.
“Coqui,” said Papi. “Baseball is a lot like life – if you can stand the smell, you’re going to love the game.”
During the game Coqui was overjoyed to see the peanut man. He did not look like Emilio, but those warm, oily peanuts took her right back home.
This historical fiction story is heartwarming. The illustrations by Raúl Colón are wonderful. What an amazing story!

The Month of Ramadan by Inda Ahmad Zahri

The Month of Ramadan by Inda Ahmad Zahri is a book that helps children learn about the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. Ramadan is celebrated in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar as a time of fasting from food and sinful things, a time of prayer, reflection, study, charity, and strengthening the community. During Ramadan breakfast is eaten before the sun comes up and before morning prayers. This meal is called Suhoor and consists of foods like dates, lentils, yogurt, eggs and herb tea.
During the day it is practice to fast or not to eat food, while you focus on learning gratitude, compassion, mindfulness, knowledge, love and other positive things that make a big difference in our lives and community. It is good to set aside screen time for healthy habits like helping our friends or gardening or reading.
At the end of the day the evening meal is called iftaar and then families go to mosque for tarawih prayers. Ramadan helps teach us to be grateful and to be aware of those who do not have enough. It makes you aware of kindness, strength and growth. It is good to wish someone “Ramadan Mubarak!” or “Blessed Ramadan!”
I think this picture book and the lovely illustrations explained Ramadan so easily. It was a great read!

You Broke It! by Liana Finck

I’m not sure I am the person to review You Broke It! by Liana Finck. Usually I would love the dry family humor, but I a in such a funk that the absurdity of it makes me want to scream until I got to the end where the animal child says, “I am just being myself,” and the parent gives them a hug.
The illustrations of parenting in the wild are similar to comic strips which are not my genre but they tell a story. I think the tears on my cheeks mean this message must be valid.

Kwesi and Nana Ruby Learn to Swim by Kobina Commeh

Kwesi and Nana Ruby Learn to Swim by Kobina Commeh is a beautiful historical fiction story illustrated by Barbara Quintino that shows how Kwesi and Nana Ruby encourage each other to learn to swim. Kwesi was very afraid to learn but he was surprised to know that Nana had never learned to swim as a child because when she had immigrated to the United States from Ghana, as a child, Black families were not allowed to use the public pools and beaches. Some White people did very mean things to make black people afraid of water, so Nana Ruby had never learned to swim.
But it is no longer unsafe to swim in public pools and Nana Ruby wanted Kwesi to learn to swim so she promised to learn, if Kwesi learned to swim. So both Kwesi and Nana Ruby worked together to learn to swim and they were able to enjoy swimming in the Lagoon Lake together too.
I love this powerful story that celebrates civil rights and I think you should too.

Yours, Befana: A Letter from the Winter Witch by Barbara Cuoghi

I have never heard of Befana before I read Yours, Befana A Letter From the Winter Witch by Barbara Cuoghi and of her I am very curious. I think I will try to find more books about her because Santa is not so interesting to me; but a wise woman who is invisible and arrives on January 6th (12 days after Christmas) and leaves presents that money can’t buy, from a woman who can’t be bought, sounds like the kind of honesty and fantasy my world needs. She also speaks to my heritage from Italy. I love the illustrations by Elenia Beretta.
The magic of winter and witches and humanity is celebrated in this book and I love it!

Happy New Year! Yes, I know it is late. I was really busy. I don’t remember what I was doing but I am sure it was overwhelming. Oh, yes! We have had a new president and I have been reading about politics, well, as you can see, I was overwhelmed. Well I was going to stop reading children’s books, but then I realized that was a poor choice, so now I am playing catch up and I will, indeed catch up.
So without further ado, here is 5 Books for January 2026…LOL!

Dreams To Ashes by Livia Blackburne
By 1871, 172 Chinese people had settled in Los Angeles because they were drawn to California for a better way of life. The stories of gold was promising, but elusive, in actuality. So these travelers made money made money by many other trades among the people who lived in The United States. Dreams To Ashes by Livia Blackburne is a nonfiction history account of how people from China, trying to help their families back in their homeland survived here.
White people were jealous and passed laws that took freedoms away from Chinese people. They thought Chinese people were taking jobs from white people.
On October 24, 1871 there was a gunfight between 2 gangsters and a policeman was shot. People reacted too quickly, wanting revenge. They arrived at the Chinese neighborhood and the sheriff and city marshal deputized bystanders, telling them to shoot anyone trying to escape. In the end 18 humans were killed. Only one of them was part of the original gunfight.
The same newspapers who encouraged people to hate the Chinese people, now condemned the violence. Chinese people filed suits, while other Chinese communities sent aid. 525 men were charged for the attack. 10 stood trial. No witnesses were allowed to testify. 8 men were convicted but the California Supreme Court overturned their sentences.
Legislation has come and gone. So have people and businesses. The art by Nicole Xu illustrates the truth and the hope we must keep hold of. This is a powerful story but not one that young children can probably understand. I would think this story might be best for a child of 8, middle grade, or older.

Dreams To Ashes by Livia Blackburne is a story about a real moment in United States history about a gun fight that took place on October 24, 1871, in a Chinese neighborhood, that turned into a massacre that took many lives. The imagery created by Nicole Xu is as profound as this immigration story. The lessons we can learn are still available. This story is meant for a more mature child.

Poo Pile on the Prairie by Amy Hevron is a great nonfiction nature story about how bison poop becomes a meal, a home, and fertilizer for so many creatures, critters, and creeping things in the meadow as the seasons change from spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The illustrations and rhythm are inspiring and I know any child who wants to talk about poop, and many of them do, will really enjoy this picture book as much, or maybe even more than I do; I didn’t even notice it was about science.

What Love Looks Like by Laura Obuobi teaches us that love looks like poetry and adventures we take in our imagination. Illustrated by works of art created by Anna Cunha, this book can take you as far as your mind can take you. This wonderful children’s book is magnificent and a wonderful way to end the day, spreading seeds for beautiful dreams. I think you should read this one. I am definitely going to buy this one for my collection.

Vision of Beauty by Kathryn Lasky
Vision of Beauty by Kathryn Lasky is the biography history of Sarah Breedlove Walker, who might be better known as Madame CJ Walker. Sarah was born on December 23, 1867. She was the first free-born child of Minerva and Own Breedlove, and their third child. They were sharecroppers in Delt, Louisiana.
Yellow Fever, Consumption, and Cholera were common in the hot, humid towns along the Mississippi River and Sarah’s parents were not able to over come these diseases because of poor nutrition. She was an orphan by the time she was 7-years-old.
In 1904, after being inspired at the St Louis World’s Fair, Sarah prayed to God. She had seen black women with beautiful hair, and she asked God to make hers stop falling out. That night she had a dream of Africa. She saw plants, trees, flowers, and leaves. She imagined oils and other ingredients that could be used on her hair. When she awoke she began looking for these herbs, salves, different items.
She tried the products on herself until they were perfect. In 1905, she married Charles Walker and named herself Madame CJ Walker, as well as her business. Although she was poorly educated, she hired people to help her and teach her. She built a business that allowed women to sell her products and make good wages. She also invested in her culture and community.
This chapter book has wonderful pictures by Nneka Bennett and is probably appropriate for ambitious 2nd graders and up. The story itself, is inspiring for any young lady or entrepreneur.

Vision of Beauty by Kathryn Lasky is a nonfiction story about how Madame CJ Walker came from nothing and through hard word built a successful business that was able to invest into her community and help others live well. I love this story.

Lady of the Lines by Michaela MacCall
Sometimes you need to see proof of something that exists just because. Lady of the Lines by Michaela MacCall is a memoir about how Maria Reiche saved the Nazca Lines in Peru. These amazing large drawings in the desert, that can only be seen from a helicopter, or by Googling “Nazca Lines” were created between 500 BCE – 500 CE.
In 1941 Reiche was asked by Dr. Paul Kosok to investigate some lines that were disappearing. When she got there, Reiche bought all the brooms she could find and a box of sweet potatoes to live off of and began sweeping the years of rocks and sand that had collected on top of the lines that revealed the many shapes, some being a spider, monkey, a whale, hummingbird, a condor and many others.
These lines became Reiche’s life’s works as she had to petition government protection. She wrote a book. She made connections for structures to be build so people could view the art without disturbing the lines. This book is great for kids interested in anthropology and science. I would think third graders and up. The illustrations by Elisa Chavarri really help you connect with this story.

Lady of the Lines by Michaela MacCall is a story about how Maria Reiche saved the Nazca Lines is Peru. I had never heard of the Nazca Lines before I read this book. I think what Reiche did is amazing. What an astounding inspiration that this woman took on the preservation of this site and made it her life’s work.

When I go to the library, I don’t look for specific books. I tend to wander over to the new releases and grab a couple that grab my attention. If my wife is with me, I might let her pick a few, if she doesn’t take too long. And then I randomly wander around until I have chosen 5 – 10, depending on how many months I am searching for. It really doesn’t take very long. A couple of the books I chose were hard for me to read. Some topics are hard to read. But every book is worth reading. I guess people are like that too. But every person is important and I will take that belief with me everywhere I go.

In one of my latest book pile purchases I found myself drawn to a nonfiction Christian book entitled Life of the Beloved by Henri J.M. Nouwen. It was a small, used theology book, with no dust cover but my sister, Jamie Holloway, often shares quotes by this wise man and I thought he would make a particularly something day feel something and he did. For the last month or so, the nerves in my face have been having a party and that is no fun for me. It makes speaking, eating, drinking and even sleeping terrible. This beautiful faith book was a reminder of what I know my Creator thinks of me and it helped me stay focused and creative because that is how you find any joy in a hard time.
Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the “Beloved.” Being the Beloved expresses the core truth of our existence.
Any other voices we might hear proves that you are worth something or that you must do something to be relevant, spectacular or powerful and then you will earn the love you desire. But by being the Beloved, you just are.
When love chooses, it chooses with a perfect sensitivity for the unique beauty of the chosen one, and it chooses without making anyone else feel excluded.
God, is the only one that can choose perfectly. Or whatever you call the Creator.
When the world does not choose us, we have to dare to know the truth that God did. Everyone else in the world has their own agenda or need to control, their own feelings of self-doubt, low self-esteem or insecurities, fears, depression or any other thing that might cause them to pull you down with them but the greatest spiritual battle, that never ends, is with us knowing and holding our Belovedness.
I am not an accident. I am a divine choice.
A blessing touches the original goodness of the other and calls forth their Belovedness. Blessings are all around us and if we are too busy, we miss them. Prayer and presence help us to become more perceptive. Not claiming blessings will lead to the land of the cursed. You have to choose how you want to live. When you are aware of your blessings you will want to call out the blessings you see in yourself and others.
No one is brought to life through curses, gossip, accusations or blaming.
We must befriend our brokenness, which seems unnatural and masochistic. But brokenness is an intimate part of our being. Just as a our chosenness is. When you are not afraid, you can face anything and eventually you might have peace and even joy where fear and anxiety once were.
If you only curse your brokenness, that is what you will have. But if you put it under the blessedness of being the Beloved, as you are, it can become a gift. Our lives find their fulfillment in giving ourselves to each other.
I think that is our deepest human desire is to give ourselves to each other as a source of physical, emotional and spiritual growth.
This is a very special book. I have been on this journey for that last 12 years. Maybe longer. When I stopped fighting the direction I was supposed to go, whether I call it, religion or spirituality, I learned to listen more, and to ask more questions; to know that I don’t know everything, but know that what I do know is important but not more important than the human I am looking at, I began to understand my Belovedness. The term stopped making me scared.
I think this book says what I have learned and a little more, very well.

Life of the Beloved by Henri J.M. Nouwen is a wonderful little book that talks about how we are chosen by our Creator to be Beloved. How this chosenness can help us to choose a life of blessing for ourself and for others. How we can choose to speak and live well and call out the good for each other and find peace and joy instead of fear and anxiety. In this short book of letters to a friend, Nouwen, shares his heart and how to love.

Gather Together In My Name by Maya Angelou is a biography that takes place directly after World War III when there is hope for white supremacy to subside and more opportunity to come, but people who had more money while they created goods for war, suddenly lost those jobs. And since there was no real change in education, social norms, or expectations, change did not happen.
17-year-old Marguerite, or Rita, has just given birth to her son, Guy. With nothing more than a high school diploma, she must learn how to make her way in the world as a single black mother, knowing she wants something different than what she knows.
“If the tables could have turned at that instant, I would gladly have consigned every white person living and the millions dead to hell where the devil was blacker than their fears of blackness and more cruel than forced starvation.”
In this nonfiction memoir, Rita travels from San Francisco to Los Angeles, San Diego to Stamps, Arkansas and back to San Francisco, to Stockton and then to Oakland. She worked as kitchen help, a cook, waitress, a madam, store clerk, dancer, fry cook, prostitute and a seller of stolen goods. She has her heart broken a number

Rita dreamed of a relationship that would save her. Much like many young people do. Someone that will be whatever we dream we need to fulfill, whatever it is that we don’t see in ourselves. She wanted a love that was heavenly, spiritual and every now and then, physical.
“Butter-colored, honey-brown, lemon-and olive skinned. Chocolate and plumb-blue, peaches and cream. Cream. Nutmeg. Cinnamon. I wonder why my people describe our colors in terms of something good to eat.”
In Gather Together In My Name by Maya Angelou we watch Rita learn that she needs to learn to love herself because the people she has relied on have not always had her best interest in mind. But she has learned to keep her head held high and keep moving forward. You can’t change society, but you can learn how to be strong.

Technically the holidays are over, but I suggest you hold onto the joy and peace, that I hope you found while the lights were twinkling and you were making merry. This is where books, especially children’s books can make this easy. The stories are easy to digest and the bright colors and happiness is generally easier to find, even in heavier topics. This year, I hope you open more books.

I have written poetry since I was 9 years old. As much as I like writing poetry, I often don’t enjoy reading it. However, I did get some enjoyment from this children’s poetry and rhyme book. This book as 83 poems in it. It also includes notes and definitions of the different types of poems which I found interesting and inspiring. I also found the colorful blends of styles of art by Neal Layton to be fun and captivating.

Balderdash! John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books by Michelle Markel is British Literature nonfiction history book that has great timing and this book about books is kind of interesting but I don’t know if children would sit through this biography. The illustrations by Nancy Carpenter make this children’s picture book beautiful.

Pop! Goes the Nursery Rhyme by Betsy Bird is a great rhyming book. This children’s fiction picture book of fractured fairy tales has great humor, energy, and music. The illustrations that include animals, birds and nature by Andrea Tsurumi add great color and movement to the fun smashup of nursery rhymes to any story time.

As Good as Anybody: Martin Luther King and Abraham Joshua Heschel’s Amazing March Toward Freedom by Richard Michelson

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel had very different lives, yet their differences also made them brothers. King was the son of a Black Baptist preacher in Southern United States, where there were separate stores, bathrooms, parks and drinking fountains for Black and White folks. Heschel was from Poland. His father was a Jewish Rabbi. Heschel came to the United States as World War II was going on and Jews were being persecuted and killed by the Nazi Regime. Both men followed in their father’s footsteps in religion because they understood that the way things are in social justice, is not how it has always been and eventually all people will live in harmony. King and Heschel wanted to be part of the change.
“I solemnly pledge to uphold the fair name of Jews. Not only because we need their friendship, and surely we do, but mainly because bigotry in any form is an affront to us all.” Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
As King was encouraging and supporting people in the fight for civil rights, he was planning a march for voting rights in Alabama. He knew they needed as much help as they could find, so King put a call out to all supporters and Rabbi Heschel answered.
“One hundred years ago, the emancipation was proclaimed. It is time for the white man to strive for self-emancipation, to set himself free from bigotry.” Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
On March 21, 1965, the march began in Selma, AL. 4 days later, King and Heschel and 25,000 people arrived in Montgomery, AL. 4 months later, the president signed the Voting Rights Act. King and Heschel remained friends.
As Good As Anybody by Richard Michelson is a nonfiction history book about working together for good of mankind. I really enjoyed this children’s biography. The illustrations by Raul Colon were inspiring.

This year I beat cancer and I didn’t meet my books goal but I did met a lot of other goals. I am not someone that makes New Years resolutions. I try to do my best every day and a celebrate any goal I reach right away. I hope you find peace, joy and a few shareable stories this year.

November is a wonderful month because we take the time to remember what we are thankful for more than other times of the year. We should do this every day and some of us do, but even the commercials and stores have reminders for us to be thankful, even it is rooted in their desire for us to spend money while we do it. But I must remain confident in my thankfulness for books. Books have helped me learn, they have helped me be distracted when I needed to put my mind in better places, books gave be tools to be a better person. This month, I didn’t plan it but my wife, Karen G Clemenson, and I chose a lot of biographies to read. What a rich history we have here in the United States of America. Yet another thing to be thankful for. We are not perfect as a nation, but we have come so far.
Now without further ado here is 5 Books for November 2025:
Abraham Lincoln A Photographic Story of a Life by Tarya Lee Stone
Abraham Lincoln: A Photographic Story of a Life by Tanya Lee Stone
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. His family was very poor. Before he was an Illinois Senator in 1837, Lincoln had helped his father clear land and build a home, fences and outbuildings for his family, twice. Lincoln’s mother died before he was 10 years old and his older sister died while giving birth to her first child. Abraham Lincoln’s humble beginnings helped form him into the leader that American History needed.
“Lincoln inspired closeness and generosity in his friends and reciprocated when he could, but he was intensely private and did not get too emotionally attached to anyone.” Chapter 3
Lincoln loved telling stories and reading. He was resilient and an overcomer. He loved to debate. He was a member of the Whig party. He became a self-taught lawyer in 1837 and served two more terms as Senator and then served in Congress before he ran for President as a Republican.”
“Persuade our neighbors to compromise whenever you can…As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man.” Abraham Lincoln
President Lincoln is probably known most for his leadership during the Civil War, when many Southern states succeeded from the Union. The Northern states did not want slavery and the Southern states did. There were other political and financial reasons for the separation but President Lincoln believed that it was illegal for the states to leave the Union and he wanted to restore all the states.
The first 3 generals fighting for the Union in the Civil War were not effective. The Confederates (the Southern states) had more soldiers and their generals were more successful. People were getting tired of the war on slavery and the feelings against Lincoln were becoming negative. But in April of 1863, Ulysses S. Grant had success at Vicksburg. There was a Union draft. Many people wanted to preserve the Union but some were afraid that freed slaves would take jobs and others were angry that wealthy people could pay their way out of the draft. A riot broke out in New York on July 13, 1863. The draft office was burned down, stores were looted and more than 100 people died.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. It will become one thing or the other.” Abraham Lincoln
Frederick Douglass suggested creating black units of soldiers to help fight against Confederate soldiers in August 1861. The signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 encouraged black people to fight for the Union. The United States Colored Troops was set up by the War Department in May.
“Fondly do we hope — fervently do we pray — that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away with malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan — to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” Abraham Lincoln
April 15, 1865, the 16th President of the United States was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Eight other men were also captured in relation to their plans. Booth was killed during capture.
The war was over. Slavery was abolished. But the South’s economy was in a shambles. 600,000 people had died and 300,000 were wounded from the war. Reconstruction would be slow, especially without President Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln A Photographic Story of Life by Tarya Lee Stone is a 15 chapter biography that is full of details that are easy to understand and follow with pictures that tell stories of our history as a nation, by themselves. I really enjoyed this nonfiction book.

On the Trapline by David A Robertson
On the Trapline by David Alexander Robertson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Traplines are where Native American people hunt animals and live off the land. On the Trapline by David A Robertson is a book about a boy and his grandfather traveling from the city to where is grandfather lived as a child in the Indigenous Cree Nation. This special book shares words in the Cree language that express their culture. Julie Flett’s art helped bring this picture book to life.
The boy and his grandfather visited his old house, the site where his school used to be, where he learned to speak English and would sneak off to speak Cree with his friends. They saw beaver dams and eagles on their way to catch fish. His grandfather told him how everyone shared chores with his family. The saskatoon berries they picked and ate were tastier in their nature environment, than any he had had from the store. The community had a feast before they were to head home and the elders were fed first before the children.
The boy was excited to think of future visits with this grandfather. I really enjoyed this fiction picture book.

Elvis Is King! by Jonah Winter

Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and recorded his first hit, “It’s Alright,” when he was just 19 years old. Elvis is King by Jonah Winter is a fun and energetic memoir about the King of Rock and Roll. A shy southern boy that loved music and performed like none other before him created a place for himself in history but also inspired many musicians and artists to come.
The 3-D illustrations by Red Nose Studios really make this biography one of a kind. I really enjoyed this book and I think kids will love the bright art and the great details in this nonfiction children’s book that is sure to entertain the whole family.

James Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York on August 2, 1924. Go Tell it How James Baldwin Became a Writer by Quartez Harris is an empowering memoir about how James Baldwin used art to speak for Black and LGBTQIA+ people and Civil Rights. This children’s nonfiction history picture book was brought to life by the art of Gordon C. James.
Baldwin loved words and he learned that words could heal. He used his words in writing and speaking for activism and teaching. This biography is both colorful and inspiring.

When I Hear Spirituals by Cheryl Willis Hudson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When I Hear Spirituals by Cheryl Willis Hudson is a beautiful story about the author’s experience while growing up listening to the wisdom, history, emotion, religion, and spirituality that is felt and heard in this beautiful songs, meant to carry Black history, tradition, culture and stories for a people forbidden to even learn to read and write; whose lives were not their own but through poetry and song they endured in strength, perseverance and even some joy.
The words in spirituals are simple, yet powerful. The art is colorful. I often wanted to clap my hands to the music I imagined. I really enjoyed this children’s nonfiction picture book. The art by London Ladd really brought the music to life.

Sometimes books take us places we can only imagine. Sometimes our schedules can keep us so busy that we don’t realize that we have forgotten to do what we love best, which is why it is December and I am finally typing up my book reviews for October. I really loved these books. They were not my normal lighthearted stories. These books were historic and deep and I had to pay attention to them. That is how life is at times. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The History of We by Nikkolas Smith is stunning work of art and poetry and history. Smith’s paintings portray how the first humans began in Africa and lived and traveled as the population expanded throughout time. This nonfiction picture book is a joy to read.

I Am The Music Man Illustrated by Debra Potter
I am the Music Man by Debra Potter
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I was stuck regarding this picture book with no author and so I was trying to find one. Originally I believed that I Am The Music Man Illustrated by Debra Potter may be based on the 1957 Broadway musical, The Music Man by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey, however I have also found that there are other songs, one being, The German Musicianer by Peter Kennedy in 1975 and The Wonderful Musician by Walter Greenaway in 1871. It seems that this is a traditional folksong across many cultures.
As interesting, or not, as that tidbit of knowledge might be, I find this fiction story to become a bit tedious about 3 pages in. Ms. Potter’s illustrations are fetching. I love the colors and whimsey are wonderful but I feel as though the chorus seems lost if you don’t have 4 other people to sing the parts of the musical instruments and keep up the vigor that the words suggest.
Maybe I should have found a room full of children to sing with me.

Twenty-One Steps by Jeff Gottesfeld
Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld

Twenty-One Steps by Jeff Gottesfeld is a beautiful book that pays respect to the military and history of the Unknown Soldiers that have died in battle from WWI, WWII, the Korean War & Vietnam. There are Tomb Guards present with the Unknown Soldier at all times so they are never alone. There is a reverence that is portrayed grandly throughout the book, not only in words but in the illustrations by Matt Tavares.
I am not sure how children would enjoy this picture book. My wife and I enjoyed this nonfiction book, but I am not sure small children would have the attention span needed for this patriotic book.

Bearskin by Howard Pyle is a very old fairy tale written by the same author of The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. Because it is a fantasy and not like today’s stories, you can’t appreciate it with the TV on our other distractions. This book requires your full attention and you wont regret letting your mind fall into the folklore.
The illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman are beautiful and bring the picture book to life.

Tiny Stitches: The Life of Medical Pioneer Vivien Thomas by Gwendolyn Hooks

Tiny Stitches by Gwendolyn Hooks is a children’s biography about medical pioneer, Vivien Thomas. He was a son of a carpenter in Tennessee, who worked hard and saved his money to go to college to become a doctor. Unfortunately in October 1929, The Great Depression hit and the bank lost his money and he had to start over.
Vivien heard about a job opening at Vanderbilt University, an all white school. Because Vivien was black, he knew he could not attend classes at Vanderbilt, but that didn’t mean he could not benefit from experience at Vanderbilt. His interview was a success. While he was working, Vivien was reading text books, researching medicine, conducting science experiments, and learning surgical techniques. When the doctor that hired him got a position at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, went with him.
While at Johns Hopkins, Vivien researched and developed a surgical procedure for open-heart surgery on infants. He even designed instruments because there weren’t any small enough at the time. Even though he only had a high school diploma, his research and attention to detail, allowed him to create a procedure that has saved many children’s lives. This procedure was named after 2 doctors that Vivien worked with; the procedure is called Blalock-Taussig shunt.
Vivien coached Dr. Blalock through more than 150 operations. He also shared his knowledge and skills with other doctors. In 1975 Johns Hopkins University awarded Vivien Thomas an honorary doctorate degree and appointed him to the faculty as Instructor of Surgery.
I found this history book to be very inspiring and a positive illustration on culture and civil rights. The illustrations by Colin Bootman were beautiful and helped bring the this nonfiction picture book to life.

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt is very creative. The story begins with a pile of letters to Duncan from each crayon in his box. Each letter is from a different crayon. They describe the types of characters and items that the crayons might be used for. I love that the layout is in a correct letter format, as letter writing seems to be a lost art form. In the end, Duncan responds in kind, by creating a beautiful and very colorful drawing for his teacher at school. I think this picture book teaches colors, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. The illustrations by Oliver Jeffers are fun.

It’s Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr

It’s Ok to Be Different by Todd Parr is a super cute story time book. The illustrations are elementary and fun and full of great colors. The simple message of being different is ok, makes it so easy to talk about so many things, if for no other reason that to build confidence, vocabulary, emotional intelligence or many basic ideas around family and friends and even LBGTQIA relationships. I think this is such a great book.

Iggy Peck, Architect: A Picture Book by Andrea Beaty
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty is such a fun fiction read. It has a poetry-like timing to the writing that makes it fun to read. The creative vibe of Iggy is so inspiring. I love that Beaty encourages children to consider following their dreams even when their teacher doesn’t see it, until Iggy proves his passion for architecture. The illustrations by David Roberts makes the story come alive. The story is a great collaboration for art and humor.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn is the most loving story. I have loved this story for years. Children often have trouble starting new things but The Kissing Hand gives them a way to leave home with a happy thought to carry the love they have with them while they are away. The illustrations by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak are precious and endearing and sure to open wonderful conversations about emotions, animals and fantasy. This is a sweet story to share with your favorite little one.

Armadillo Rodeo by Jan Brett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Armadillo Rodeo by Jan Brett is a fun story about a young armadillo named Bo that gets separated from his mom and brothers. He spends the summer day following a pair of red cowboy boots that he thinks is a red armadillo, because armadillos have poor eye sight, at a western rodeo. Bo ends up having a day full of fun until it is time to go home and luckily his mom and brothers find him just in time. This story was a great adventure and the art is outstanding.

I have spent a lot of my time in the last 11 years mourning. This is the time that I have been dealing with my chronic physical and mental illnesses. I have 14 diagnoses and only one can be cured, so grief is part of my life as I have dealt with a lot of loss. Loss my physical abilities and loss of relationships that were not healthy and had to be removed from my life. Rising Strong by Bréne Brown is a nonfiction self help book about learning how to grieve loss in order to be better. It is a good book about psychology, personal development, leadership, mental health and grieving. Much of it was review for me, but there were several helpful elements too.
The Rising Strong Process
- Recognize emotions have been triggered and connect those emotions to thoughts or behaviors.
- Revisit, challenge and reality check our stories to learn who we are and how we engage with others.

Elements of Grief

To truly forgive we must be willing to grieve. We must bury expectations of relationship or dreams. We must give up on being right. We must give up on support and approval of others.
Shame, judgement, privilege, connection, need, fear and self-worth can all be part of the same coin. If you can look at another human in the eye, can it be our own fear of need? Can it be our own privilege not allowing us to see our similarities? We have not been taught to give, but to receive our really see who we are giving to as our equal. In a moments notice, our circumstance could change and make us equals, not just as we actually are, but as society measures us.
Blame kills relationships and organizational cultures because it is toxic.
Authenticity is required for healthy relationship because with it comes action, courage, honesty and the ability to make amends. When you feel like getting even, maybe you should get curious as to what feelings you are feeling. Why are you needing to get revenge? What has caused you shame?

Are you looking for an adventure but it is too hot outside? Sometimes you are sun burnt and you need to stay inside. I get it. The sun actually makes me sick; I am not joking, I am very thankful for air conditioning. So I use books to help me go on adventures I would never be able to go on otherwise. I have read all the Walter the Farting Dog books by Willam Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray, but not the first one — not Walter the Farting Dog — until now and I absolutely love it! Just like all Walter’s adventures in farting, there is a sweetness in the family and even though the stories are silly, the love is real. The illustrations by Audrey Colman are fun and colorful. I think all kids will enjoy these children’s classics books.

The Boy Who Cried Fabulous by Leslea Newman is splendid and will be enjoyable to any person who is easily excited about the world and poetry around them. Roger is just like one of those people and he is often late because he is easily distracted by the spectacular, magnificent, elegant world he lives in and in the end, he even proves to his parents how stunning it really is. The fantastic illustrations by Peter Ferguson really help make this story more brilliant. I highly recommend this story to your book collection and your vocabulary list!

I have always enjoyed the books I have read by Max Lucado. Come Thirsty is another of those inspirational books, yet because I was not ready for this book because my mind was stubborn, I still needed to read this nonfiction book and it helped to chip away at some of the hardness that I had let collect on me because that is what happens to us when we live in the world and forget to keep drinking the living water that is Jesus.
“Jesus is spirit and is not bound by the body. My direction is not needed but my permission is. Like water, Jesus won’t come in unless swallowed.”
Even though we are not of this world, we do live here, and sometimes we forget to keep looking toward our spirituality life source so that we don’t pick up the old life that drags us down.
“When God lives and breathes in you (and He does, as surely as He did in Jesus) you are delivered from your old, dead life. (Romans 8:11)”
Come Thirsty is a Christian book with short chapters that make it easy to read while you get ready for the day or steal a few moments between tasks and try to get your footing between the stresses that come with balancing all the things we do while we try be all the things we are trying to be.

This illustrations by London Ladd are inspiring.

Everyone was having success, but Ralph, who kept trying to find ways to get our of the room. Finally, Ralph found a quiet spot under his desk, where he began to imagine a wonderful story. When the whole class was called to the carpet to share their stories, Ralph was called first and what he shared was a huge triumph! Everyone loved Ralph’s story!

King Alice by Matthew Cordell is a story about a family on a snow day, or rather, on the second snow day. The imaginative grade schooler is writing her story, starring as King and everyone else is her brave knight, including her Dad, Mom and baby sister.
King Alice starts each chapter of her book, which are the activities of the day, with humor. King Alice illustrates them too. This story is full of colors, pirates and unicorns to talk about. I found this to be an enjoyable read.

The Red Canoe by Anne Yvonne is a beautiful story written like poetry that tells of a boy who enjoys his canoe and cares for it as he grows and eventually moves away. The canoe misses the boy, but luckily another boy moves in and fines the canoe and new adventures begin. The illustrations are stunning in this historical children’s fiction story.

I love this book! Sofia Valdez Future Prez by Andrea Beaty has good timing so it is easy to read. It has colorful and fun illustrations by David Roberts that make you want to stop and take them all in. But most of all the characters are believable and encouraging and they work together with neighbors and politics to inspire Sofia to make their community better and since Sofia is only in the 2nd grade, maybe she will keep working through activism and relationships and find herself running for president one day.

Letters from Space by Clayton Anderson is a memoir and great book for readers at a 3rd to 5th grade level. I think the fun letters and lessons that Clayton writes, that he couldn’t actually mail back to earth without them catching on fire at re-entry, might inspire children to be interested in science and even a few future astronauts. This book is written in an easy to understand format and the illustrations by Susan Batori are fun and engaging.

When I was growing up my nana would read to my sisters and I. She would come alive with the story. She did voices and her her eyes would get big. Her face would become animated and her hands would grab our attention as they shot into the sky as she exclaimed great words. Nana loved words. Her love of words were instilled to me as she told us stories and wrote me letters. This is what reading to children can do for them. When you know how to read you can do just about anything you want.

A Fire Engine for Ruthie by Lesléa Newman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A Fire Engine for Ruthie by Leslea Newman is a thoughtful story about a little girl named Ruthie as she visits her Nana. Her grandmother has planned fun things for the two of them to do: a tea party with Nana’s dolls, dress up, and painting. But what Ruthie really wants to do is play with the neighbor boy, Brian. Brian has a fire engine with a black and white dog sitting up front, a silver ladder that slides up and down and a yellow hose to unwind. It also has a siren that goes Whee-ooh! Whee-ooh! Whee-ooh! Brian also has a train, a motorcycle, trucks, buses, and kinds of vehicles.
After Ruthie did all the things that Nana planned, she got her play day with Brian and Nana joined in too. The next day, they even went to the toy store and bought Ruthie her own fire engine.
This story is sweet and encouraging. It shows how good communication can work and play time isn’t about gender. The illustrations by Cyd Moore are adorable. I really enjoyed this book.

Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel is a book with several stories in it: Down the Hill, The Corner, Ice Cream, The Surprise, and Christmas Eve. Out of all the stories, about different times of the year, my favorite is Christmas Eve. I like this classic story because I can relate to both Frog and Toad. I used to be late all the time like Frog, but I am still anxious like Toad, who thought of terrible things that could have happened to have made Frog late. In the end, Frog and Toad were very happy to spend Christmas together because they are very good friends who love each other.
Frog and Toad have always been one of my favorites.

Little Bear’s Friend by Else Holmelund Minarik is a book with 4 stories in it: Little Bear and Emily, Duck, Baby Sitter, The Party at Owl’s House, and Your Friend, Little Bear. My favorite story is Little Bear and Emily. I love the illustrations by Maurice Sendak. I also love the description of the town and area where Little Bear lives. I enjoy hearing Little Bear interact with the squirrels, and birds, the little green worm, and finally, Emily, his new friend.
All of the stories in this children’s fiction picture book are about Emily’s visit during the summer. Little Bear and Emily had a wonder time.

My nana’s love for words empowered me to be able to learn what I want, when I want because I can pick up a book or google anything and learn how to do new things. Some times it takes a bit longer than reading a few words, but as soon as I start reading, I am on my way. I hope that I can encourage you to encourage someone else to learn to love words as much as I do.

I bought The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner with Quincy Troupe at a discount with a pile of other media items I was buying on eBay. I had enjoyed the movie back when it came out and I thought that my wife and I would enjoy the book as a media tie in. Was I surprised that only about one quarter of this autobiography was actually in the movie. In fact I would not go so far to say they were the same productions. There is an amazing biography of Chris Gardner that you can read and there is a movie version that producers were willing to produce for Will Smith to star in. There are only about 300 pages in this memoir but you don’t want to miss anything. This is not a casual read, in my opinion. This is a growth journey you take with Chris starting from his childhood.
‘“The most dangerous place in the world is a public library.” That was, of course, only if you could read, because, Momma explained, if you could read, that meant you could go in there and figure anything out.’
Even though Chris’ mother spent a lot of time in prison during his life, she also made a huge impact on his belief in himself. She made sure he could read and that he always had access to books.
Gardner was in his young teens when he and his friends were being bussed to a previously all white school on the other side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was raised. Chris was aware of the civil rights march led by Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, AL and Malcolm X being killed in Harlem. His response was to join the NAACP Youth Council.
“No matter what I had in my pocket, no matter what my suit cost, nobody could prevent me from acting as if I was a winner. Nobody could prevent me from acting as if my problems were all in the process of being solved. Pretty soon, my acting as if was so convincing that I started to believe it myself.”
Chris carried his belief in himself through his military service and through every business opportunity that led to his ultimate success. He didn’t let anyone but himself define who was. Even at his lowest moments, he learned what he needed and moved on. Eventually he became the owner of his own business with the success he had dreamed of.
I did watch the movie after I was done with the book. It is a good production and I appreciate the artistry of Smith and his son, but knowing that Chris actually accomplished everything he did with a baby in diapers makes this nonfiction success story so much more profound. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it.

If you think you enjoyed the cinema production, staring Will Smith, you have only heard a very small part of the story. Reading is a great way to build our character and knowledge base. It is an excellent way to build community and relationship, whether you are reading to children or sharing books with your friends, you are sharing parts of yourself with someone. In the chaos of the world the quiet you can find in a book is so important to our mental and spiritual health. I hope you can find time for that. In the story Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle, Little Blue took a trip to the city where things are bigger and faster. Everyone was frustrated that Little Blue was not so fast but he reminded them all that with transport, one at a time was a must. When the mayor’s limousine needed repairs, Little Blue gave the mayor a ride before he headed on home.
The colorful illustrations by Jill McElmurry give lots of opportunities to work on vocabulary with your children in this board book.

Father Bear Comes Home by Else Holmelund Minarik
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Father Bear Comes Home by Else Holmelund Minarik is a wonderful collection of 4 family stories: 1) Little Bear and Owl, 2) Father Bear Comes Home, 3) Hiccups and 4) Little Bear’s Mermaid. Out of all the stories in this book, Little Bear and Owl is my favorite because Little Bear gets to help Mother Bear do something that Father Bear usually does. Right now, Father Bear is away at sea, fishing, so Little Bear gets to go to the river and be a fisherman. When he gets there, he finds Owl. They pretend to catch an octopus and a small whale, but really Little Bear caught a small fish, which is exactly what Mother Bear wanted.
The rest of the fiction stories are related to Father Bear coming home and the fun that Little Bear has with his friends.
The illustrations are simple and classic and add to the nostalgia of these stories. I had this book as a child and I am enjoying them again.

Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel is a sweet collection of 5 short stories about Frog and Toad. These fantasy stories include: 1) A List, 2) The Garden, 3) Cookies, 4) Dragons and Giants, and 5) The Dream. After reading all the stories, my all time favorite is Cookies. My best friends and sister, Jamie Holloway and I love to cook and eat and this story reminds me us trying to have self-control, or will power as Frog and Toad call it. The boys give it their all but finally offer the rest of their cookies to the birds. However, Toad, who made the cookies, decides that he doesn’t like all this will power, and he decides to go home to bake a cake.
These two friends are as supportive of each other as they can be. This story shows how creative they were to make good choices about not over-eating and being helpful with each other. I think this a great story time book.

Curious George is a monkey known for getting into mischief and having adventures but this story, Curious George Learns the Alphabet by H. A. Rey is pretty mild. In fact, it was so long, I should have taken a break. The alphabet can be tedious to learn in one sitting and even Curious George, The Man in the Yellow Hat and all the animals didn’t make it very fun for me.

In the Night Garden by Carin Berger
In the Night Garden by Carin Berger is an amazing book with captivating poetry. I have read this book before and had to add it to my personal collection. I imagine if my Nana, who loved to read stories to her grandchildren, were still with us, she would love to look at the amazing collage like art and let the beautiful words dance on her tongue. She would have loved this book as much as I do.
This one is worth owning and sharing.

Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle is a picture book about friends. Little Blue Truck is friends with all the animals on the farm and this really comes in handy when he gets stuck in the mud and teaches the not so friendly dump truck the importance of being kind.
The charming illustrations by Jill McElmurry really make this transport book fun. I think this cardboard book is perfect for story time or just talking about the animals, colors, trucks and nature.

Little Bear’s Visit by Else Holmelund Minarik

Little Bear’s Visit by Else Holmelund Minarik is a wonderful read. I have read it before, as a child, and it was nice to be reminded of this family classic. This book has 4 stories in it: 1) Grandmother and Grandfather Bear 2) Mother Bear’s Robin 3) Golden Story 4) Not Tired.
I must say Mother Bear’s Robin is my favorite because Mother Bear had raised her bird but she knew she had to let it go in order for it to be happy. Even though she loved the bird and the bird loved her, the bird was meant to live outside as before. This is an important lesson for us all to learn.
The illustrations by Maurice Sendak are beautiful, yet simple. I think this fiction story is perfect for bedtime routines.

Corduroy’s Easter Party by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers
Corduroy’s Easter Party by Don Freeman
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Unlike most other Corduroy children’s stories, Corduroy’s Easter Party by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, did not include his normal adventures or Lisa, Corduroy’s best friend. I missed both. It was nice that Corduroy could have a nice time preparing for an Easter holiday party but this story just doesn’t have the same magic that most stories based on the character created by Don Freeman have.
The Illustrations by Lisa McCue are well-polished but maybe too polished for a traditional Corduroy adventure.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I really want to like the fantasy story, Babar the King by Jean De Brunhoff but I don’t. It is a very long story about an elephant society and their king and I can’t imagine getting a child to sit through all the crazy (and not in a good way) things that happen in this book. The illustrations are attractive but the story line about building their kingdom is completely unbelievable.

My favorite story has to be The Light-Up Night by Ellie O’Ryan. The characters from Bambi come to life as it is just about bed time for everyone except Owl. He is nocturnal, which means he sleeps during the day and hunts at night. He is excited because tonight there should shooting stars. When he shares this with young Bambi and Thumper they want to see the shooting stars too. They have never seen shooting stars before. After Owl promises to keep the boys safe, the trio head off to the meadow. On their way they see fireflies. Those are not shooting stars. When they get to the meadow, it begins to rain and they also see and hear lightening and thunder. This is not shooting stars. When the rain stops, finally the sky is filled with sparks of light. Bambi and Thumper are so excited to finally see shooting stars, that when they are done, they are sad. But when they time is right, they will be able to see more shooting stars.

Books are so important. If there is one thing that stands out that my wife, Karen G Clemenson, and I have in common in our upbringing it is that our families ensured that we could read and they were serious about it. The books I grew up with were part of my childhood and part of me. They took me places when there was no one around to take me anywhere. Even as an adult, I am still traveling through books and learning and growing and reading children’s books is saving me from the stress of adult life; I really need this right now. I encourage you, even if you don’t have children that live with you to dig out your favorite children’s books and read them. Let the stress of the day melt off and be reminded of an easier time.

Standing in the Need of Prayer by Carole Boston Weatherford
I have read and reviewed Standing in the Need of Prayer by Carole Boston Weatherford in the past. It was such an outstanding and powerful, poetry book based on the words of a gospel song and brought to life with the meaningful and strong illustrations by Frank Morrison, that I had found at the Longview Public Library, that I chose to add this book to my personal collection. As I opened the package, last week, I realized that the timing was perfect to share Standing in the Need of Prayer again for Black History Month.
I love this nonfiction book because it doesn’t hide the slave ships that first began bringing stolen people to the United States in 1619, before we were ever the United States of America, yet the artist doesn’t go so far that young children will be too frightened. The chains of oppression are right out in front, but so is hope. The book illustrates how Black people made themselves heard through speeches, music, art, military service, politics, sports, and being willing to stand where others had not before. Within these pages, growth is celebrated.
I also find the resources in the back of this picture book to be helpful and inspiring. We may have more to do, but we have come so far.

Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik
Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
When I was a little girl, I enjoyed Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik. This book actually has four stories in it: What will Little Bear Wear?, Birthday Soup, Little Bear Goes to the Moon, and Little Bear’s Wish. Although I enjoyed all of the stories, and I had a hard time choosing between the last two, Little Bear Goes to the Moon is my favorite story because I love when children use their imagination.
Armed with his homemade space helmet, Little Bear, insists he can fly like a bird to the moon, even though his mother bear says that isn’t true. Along with his imagination, he finds that the moon is just like his world and he makes it home in time for lunch, where he can stop living his fantasy and enjoy the lunch Mother Bear made for him.
The illustrations by Maurice Sendak are simple and endearing and add to this classic fiction story, which has a lot of repetition and rhyme, This is perfect for young children learning to read.

The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff
The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff moves very fast. there are so many things that happen in this book about animals, elephants, family and France, yet there isn’t time to absorb them. The idea of this story is fantastic but very hard to believe. I was shocked to see that I have read this book before and loved it. It is amazing what a few years can do to one’s perspective.
I do think the illustrations are wonderful and help tell the story quite a lot.

The Story of Babar The Little Elephant by Jean De Brunhoff, was published in 1933 and must have been quite a hit among children. I know I loved it. Even though Babar loses his mother, his adventurous spirit leads him to the city and new human friends. Later he becomes king. What a sweet story that I believe can stand the test of time.

Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In the book Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel, I found a total of 5 stories: Tomorrow, The Kite, Shivers, The Hat, and Alone. I really had a hard time choosing a favorite but I finally decided on Alone. The reason I chose Alone, is that even the best of friends sometimes needs some time alone and that is what this story is about. Toad went to Frog’s house to find a note telling Toad that Frog was gone and that he wanted to be alone.
Toad spent the day worrying about their relationship, when really Frog was in great spirits and just wanted to spend uninterrupted time being thankful. Being thankful is important, just like spending time with our friends.
I really enjoy the honest and authentic amphibian relationship that Frog and Toad share.

Harold’s ABC’s by Crockett Johnson
Harold’s ABC by Crockett Johnson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I believe I have read all or at least most of Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon books, but I must admit, Harold’s ABC’s is my least favorite of these children’s classics. The story and the art was tedious and forced to include all the letters of the alphabet in order. This is very unlike the natural flow of Harold’s natural drawing imagination.

January has been quite the month. It is the start of a new year and the start of a new presidency. I have been having some dental work done. There are many reasons to turn to children’s books. As I have written before, children’s books are great stress reliever. We don’t have children in our house, but we sure do own a lot of children’s books, not just so I can write this blog, but in case my great nephews come over…or any other amazing short people or just anyone that wants to have a light read wants to grab one.

The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan and Jan Berenstain is just another sweet story, in a long line of high morale children’s classics that help teach positivity. In this story, Mama Bear is a bit stressed because every time Brother and Sister go to visit a friend, they come back, excited about what their friends have, they they don’t have. But on this day, there is thunder and lightening storm that knocks out the electricity. This is the perfect time for Mama and Papa to talk about the weather and counting their blessings as the family huddles around the fire with their hot chocolate.
I find this fiction animal picture book to be endearing and educational.

Harold’s Fairy Tale by Crockett Johnson is a fantasy that begins in an enchanted garden with no flowers. Of course Harold must find out why that is, so on his art adventure he ends up in a castle with a sad king. There Harold meets with a witch with giant feet, a swarm of mosquitos, fire, rain and then a beautiful enchanted garden full of flowers and a fairy that gives him one wish, that he trades for a flying carpet that brings him home. When he finds his mother, he asks her to read him a bedtime story.

Curious George is a monkey that always finds himself in an adventure. In Curious George Flies a Kite by Margret Rey, the man in the yellow hat has work to do so George has the day to amuse himself. His new ball is a lot of fun, until George gets distracted by the window and must see who would live in the tiny house next door. This is George’s first experience with rabies and he really enjoys them until he sees a man going fishing. He tries to go fishing on his own but has no success and luckily his friend, Bill, is there to help get George out of the water. Bill has a kite, which turns out to be great fun until George attempts to fly the kite by himself. Fortunately, the man in the yellow hat is able to catch George in a helicopter and bring George and the kite back home.
This fun fiction children’s classic with animals is brought to life by the colorful pictures by H. A. Rey. This picture book is full of humor, morals and the innocent whims of Curious George.

Frank the Farting Flamingo by Humor Heals Us is just another children’s fiction picture book that gives us another reason to talk about farting. I don’t think most kids need a reason for this, but they will enjoy it. Frank is adorable though…and who doesn’t like to fart anyway?
I originally bought a copy of this book for my friend Linea, who insists she has the soul of a 10-year-old boy living inside of her. She loves flamingos and it made her laugh so much that I bought a copy for myself.

Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel

I had Frog and Toad books as a child and I was glad to recently obtain the collection. Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel is a delightful collection of 5 stories about amphibian friends, Frog and Toad: Spring, The Story, A Lost Button, A Swim and The Letter. I enjoyed all of the stories about Frog and Toad and their animal friends but my favorite is The Story.
Frog had come to visit Toad and he did not feel well. Toad offered Frog his bed and Frog asked Toad for a story. Toad, not able to think of a story, did all sorts of things to try to make his brain come up with one. He was not successful. But just as Frog felt better, he and Toad switched spots, because Toad no longer felt well. In turn, Toad asked for a story and Frog told Toad a story about a friend that did all sorts of silly things to help him come up with a story to tell his sick friend. By the end of the story Toad was sound asleep.
When I read this classic children’s story, my wife, Karen G Clemenson, had come home for lunch and she very much enjoyed these stories too. She told me that she enjoyed The Letter the most. It was about Toad and how he got sad waiting for the mail because he never got anything. When he told Frog about this, Frog immediately went home and wrote him a letter about how much he enjoyed his friendship. Frog gave the message to a snail to deliver. Four days later, as they were waiting for the mail, both Frog and Toad were overjoyed that Toad got such a lovely letter. I enjoyed this story too because it reminded me of my sister, Jamie Holloway, and I because even though we communicate daily, we also send letters to each other.
I enjoy how these two friends truly love and accommodate each other in this book. What a lovely example of friendship.

Santiago is an old Cuban fisherman. He lives alone because his wife has died. He fishes alone because the boy, Manolin, he used to fish with no longer has permission to fish with him after so many day without fish. This does not stop the boy from caring for him though. Santiago likes to talk about baseball, but he loves to dream about Africa, in his youth and about the lions on the beach.
After 85 days, Santiago set off his fishing adventure alone to go fishing. This time his line is caught be a great fish. A fish longer than the boat and larger than he had ever caught by himself. For 3 days and 2 nights Santiago held onto this mighty fish, that he greatly respects. He finally brought the fish to his demise. He lashed the great marlin to the side of the boat.
As they headed home, 6 sharks attacked the carcass before an entire army of sharks made their way to the boat. Santiago fought them all, but they all got their share of that great fish. Santiago was sad that he had allowed the great fish to take them so far out and that he had even killed the great fish only to have lost him to the sharks.
The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a beautiful American Novel about friendship, longevity, respect for life and honesty. It was a wonderful read. It was written in 1952 and in 1954 it won the Nobel Prize for literature. This is the first book by Ernest Hemingway I have ever read, but I am sure it is not my last.
